Cue the usual storm of complaints. Religion and humour, sometimes appear to be mutually exclusive!

Great Boards of Canada track :-)

'crucified' is quite a common term used by the Irish when something is very expensive etc.

Really people, starving children and the Government allowing people to lose their homes while they increase their own benefits.
Let's get some priorities here, yeah?

In many European countries that ad wouldn't work because most people would be unable to recognise any connection between crucifixion and Easter.

Carlsberg a euro a can......... hmmm *counts cash* :D

Well this thread certainly hasn't taken off the way some were no doubt hoping it would. Looks like the storm of complaints was pre-empted somewhat by posters telling people not to complain.

Anywho a bit insensitive given the time that's in it but meh, wouldn't expect anything else.

Yeah, but it's Lindemanns, so expect headaches!

In my opinion, (apart from the aforementioned fact that it is a common expression in Ireland - although there is a connection being made with crucifixion and Easter), it's not the shop's problem if someone gets offended. We need to rid our culture of "freedom of speech except for religion".

Didn't you see anyone complaining here? Or has this been mentioned anywhere else? I'd doubt it, unless the likes of the Herald are looking to invent a controversy.

It's poor business sense if you ask me. As a business man meself I would never dream of bringing anyones religion into marketing items because I'm bound to see a major drop in sales.

Will I be shopping nextdoor after seeing this advertisement? um...NO! :) I'm going to go somewhere where my beliefs are respected.

Thanks for sharing... !!!. Here is one house who won't be shopping in tesco this easter!!!

Don't know why people get hung up about not drinking once a year......

Did you read the ad. its plan that its a play on the ban on alcohol on good friday.

Why even bring "Crucified" + Sale of Alcohol.. into the picture as easter.

Its ignorant and offensive.. And so say also 35 friends now.

PS... We never party on Friday/Saturday at easter....

Yes, did you? are you telling me you and (now 35) of your friends all read this ad and then decided, individually, to boycott Tesco? Is this true?
its plan that its a play on the ban on alcohol on good friday.

No it's not. They are advertising their drinks promotions as Holy Thursday is normally one of their busiest days.

There is no "ban on alcohol". it's a ban on the SALE of alcohol, which they are adhering to.
Why even bring "Crucified" + Sale of Alcohol.. into the picture as easter.

Because it makes reference to the story of Easter. Jesus was crucified on Good Friday was he not? And now "crucified" is a term used in modern Ireland for other things, It's quite clever.
Its ignorant and offensive.. And so say also 35 friends now.

It's certainly not ignorant. What are they ignoring?

    And how is it offensive?
PS... We never party on Friday/Saturday at easter....

    Good for you.

So, once again, why are you and your friends boycotting Tesco?

As a non-Christian I dont expect you to understand how it is disrespectful to the Christian belief.

There are many kind of jokes, the sexist, the racist and the bigot kind ( list goes on I'm sure ). Depending on ones disposition in life they will find any one of those funny and not funny/disrespectful.

I find this ''joke'' to be disrespectful one that I dont find funny and is in real bad taste.

Wait, you think I need to be Christian to understand? I'm not black but I understand why one calling someone else "******" is disrespectful. I'm not sure you've fully thought this line of thinking through

(also, I used to be a Christian if that helps)

Indeed. I am Irish and whilst living abroad my friends would always make "Irish man" jokes. They weren't directed at me, they weren't being malicious, they were telling jokes and a lot of them were very funny. They certainly were not disrespecting me.
I find this ''joke'' to be disrespectful one that I dont find funny and is in real bad taste.

You've said that already but you haven't answered my question.

Why exactly is it you feel disrespected?

Em, Next Door isn't the same as Tesco. Just a small local off-licence chain.

Shhhhhhhh.......... all his mates are apparently boycotting Tesco over this! 35 different people have decided to boycott Tesco, with every single one of them indepentendly making the same ridiculous mistake.

    Seems legit!

I'm not black but I understand why one calling someone else "******" is disrespectful.

If that is the case, then you will equally understand that a joke made about a black person in order to market a product, is just as disrespectful as using a persons Christian creed in life to do so is disrespectful to that person and race as a whole. Our beliefs are not seperate from us. it is who we are, Christians are a ''race'' of people.

It's a little tasteless but I don't find it offensive. To compare it to racism is way over the top.

I find the advertisement cheap and is synonymous with the rag that it is published in.

You wouldn't find this in the Irish Times. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,323 ✭✭✭✭MrStuffins

    Lol!
    Christians are NOT a race!

    I would agree.

Mocking religion is one thing but mocking God is another.

It is written: "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap". Galatians 6vs7

No thanks! There isnt even a picture! :pac::pac:

Anyway, as a christian i think its in bad taste. Am i disrespected? No.
Its a simple play on words, it doesnt mock me or make fun of anyone. The crucifixion was around long before Jesus was and nowadays the word can mean something else also.
