Tablet recomendations

hiya,

I am looking to pick up a reasonably priced tablet and have no idea where to start looking.

I only need it for 3 things

1) Basic internet browsing
2) Skype
3) Download cartoons etc for the LO - its basically to replace a portable DVD player for the car/holidays etc

We both have iphones so dont want to spend much money on it - came across this http://www.adverts.ie/tablet/7-tablet-pc-android-2-2-apad/1510686 but no idea if its any good!

any tips would be much appreciated!

What ever you do, before you buy one, make sure it is skype VIDEO compatible. I bought a sony s tab at xmas and i while i am happy with it, its not compatible with skype video calls.

I'm thinking of getting an Archos 10 G9, looks ok for a cheaper tablet. Anyone recommend any good sites or shops for the best bargain

Have a look at the Motorola Xoom, they're cheap enough now, especially the 1st gen ones, the 2nd gen are worse as they have no SD port. Adverts have plenty of them

Also, don't get the one you linked, it's rubbish.

Looks good at a glance, but it's important to look closely at the features they don't highlight! In this case it's the screen resolution which is only 800 X 480, you really want to get a 7" tablet with 1024 X 600 resolution or you'll be scrolling web pages forever.

Looking for an Ice Cream Sandwich upgradable tablet (either by official update or through custom roms)

I see the MOTOROLA XOOM on ebay for around €310 delivered.

For this price range, is there anything else which is superior?

Rooting and messing around with it is a plus so it's good to see there's an active section on XDA developers for the XOOM.

I could stretch to €480 if there's anything that's worth it.

I got a XOOM today, very happy with it. Great bit of kit.

Think I'll wait, might get a better screen, quad core etc.
