Can somebody explain to me the concept of the 12 lessons under the EDT scheme? Is it compulsory to get 12 lessons now? I'm doing my theory in a few weeks, please God I'll pass first time!

If you have never held a learner permit prior to April 2011, you will have to do 12 EDT lessons with an instructor before you can sit your test and get your full license. The instructor must be authorized by the RSA, (In other words, you can't get a family member or friend to do your 12 lessons with you.) Each lesson will cover specific aspects of driving. You will have a log book that the instructor will give you at the start of the lessons. If the instructor feels that you have properly absorbed the contents of each lesson and are showing progress, he will sign and stamp the page for each lesson as to it being complete. If he feels you are just not getting it, he may refuse to stamp the page, insist on another lesson covering the same stuff, or your going off and getting some more practice. Everyone does not learn at the same pace but if you get lots of practice between lessons, 12 of them should be enough.

Your instructor will also set up a profile account for you on the RSA website. After each successfully completed lesson he will go on line and register it as being done. You will not be assigned a date for your driving test unless these 12 lessons are logged with the RSA. You must have had your leaner permit for 6 months before you can sit your test.

Between lessons, you practice your driving so that you can put into practice what you learn in each lesson. You must be accompanied by another person (your sponsor) who has held a full DL for at least 2 years. There is a page in the log book for the instructor and sponsor to leave notes for each other in case they want to keep each other up to speed on your progress, or areas that either person feels you need more instruction on or practice doing.

When you have done all 12 of your lessons and waited your six months, you apply for your test, and are assigned the first available date. You must bring your log book with you as this will be inspected by your tester on test day.

How long is the waiting list for the test, and can I apply before the 6 months is up? i.e. if I complete my 12 lessons in 3 months, could I apply for the test straight away? (assuming a 3 month waiting list in this scenario).
I got my learners permit a month ago, doing my 4th EDT lesson this evening, so at this rate I'll be on course for completing the 12 in around 3 months.

I'm not sure about the waiting list, but I'm pretty sure you have to wait the six months from when your provisional license is issued before you can sit the test :)

Oh I know I have to wait 6 months, but if there was say a 3 month wait from when you apply, I don't want to wait 9 months, I'd like to apply early so by the time it comes around I have my 6 months done.

Ah right :P Well I've never heard of a 3 month waiting list for a driving test :P Are you sure it's that long?

Not at all. That's my question :) My Driving instructor said 3 months, but that seemed a bit excessive to me!

Well I have a lesson on Sunday, I'll ask my instructor, see what he says and report back :)

No, you will not be assigned a date for your test until you have done your 12 lessons, AND held your learner permit for at least 6 months. You can't apply to do it until those 6 months are up.

The RSA website has a link that shows the average wait times at each test centre. It varies from test centre to test centre. For example, the average wait at Kilarney is only 5 weeks, but it is 13 weeks in Naas. Most test centres are between 7-9 weeks, but this is only an average, nothing is guaranteed.

If you mark on your application that you are available for cancelations if they occur, you may get a date quicker. But essentially your wait will be the 6 months, plus whatever the time frame is before the first test date becomes available.

When do you actually get the Learner Permit? Is there a way to skip this 6 months wait between the LP and the test for the Full License?? Thanks a lot!!

No, you can not skip the 6 months wait.

If you hold a full DL from a non European country you don't have to wait the 6 months before you can apply to do your test. If you send them in details of your driving record from your home country & the DL itself, you will be assigned the first available date for you test. Obviously, that will not apply to the average Irish learner driver. The 6 month rule applies to them.

You get your learner permit by going into your local motor tax office with your paperwork (application form, passport photos, proof of address, theory test pass certificate & eye sight exam) and paying the fee. The learner permit will be posted out to you in about a week.

Hi. You can apply for a test date at anytime but you will not be issued witha date until the 12 EDT lessons are completed and recorded on the RSA Edt system and as mentioned you will only be given a date which is at least 6 months from the date of your learner permit issue date
