Hi there just wanted to pick the your collective brains. I'm looking to buy a new car, I have a modest budget(less than 24k) and a growing family. I had been leaning toward the octavia, but have come across these altea's at about the 22.7k mark. It'd be nice not too max the budget but I'm kinda wary of these cars. I've not seen too many on the road. A big bonus over most cars in this price point is how big the altea is. Anyway thanks in advance.

My Brother has one, he is very tall and needed the headroom. I have driven it a few times, very roomy and comfortable, interior is a little plasticky but overall a nice car. Its cheap to service and run, the wipers are funny due to the direction they move in.

Ya I'm 6'4" myself and it is roomy alright. I don't know I'm probably just bricking it because no one seems to be spending these days. You'd hate be making a feck up.

You can pick them up used for half nothing.
I wouldn't be buying one new though, they're quite an old car now (and a good old 1.9 TDI would be less of a worry than the new CR diesels)

Bad value at the 22.7k mark? Feck it I was kinda convincing myself there.
Im planning on keeping my next car for a good few years that's why I'm buying new so the model will age anyway. Would I not have the same problem with all new engines in that case? Are they a bad job?

Should be able to buy a brand new Ford C-Max on your budget:

The thing with an altea xl (or a normal altea, or a Toledo) is that they're neither one thing or the other. It's a lot of car for the money alright

That's what had me looking at them, I've 2 children under 2 yrs so I've more space with it than much else Ive seen yet anyway. I would pref a passat all being equal but there's too much in the difference for me anyway. But then I'm telling myself they are similar DNA engine wise. (headf**k)

    Buy a year old Passat.

If you plan on keeping it for years, then it will make no odds if it is an 11 or 12.

Go on holidays with the change.

Consider something like a Touran, C-Max or Verso which will have 7 seats and be a lot more practical.

What engine does it have out of interest?

    I'd be shocked if it wasn't a 1.6 TDI

1.4 turbos are available I believe too.

He'd hardly buy one of those though?

I just checked the website and they have come down in price quite significantly! You're on the ball as there is a special edition diesel shown for just over €21k. I presume with metallic paint and the delivery charge that would be another €1500?

Did you buy straight sale without a trade in?

Had a trade in alright. Didn't get the highest offer off them but the cost to change was worse for cars which suited less.
What swung it for me was the engine/drivetrain is the same as a good few other cars I'd prefer passat superb ect. But the actual body suited my suitation better than those mentioned. Not the prettiest of motors but hopefully it'll go a long while.

Best of luck with your purchase. We have one for almost 2 years (1.9) and the car is roomy and practical.

Diesel usage is disappointing though. The bulk of the car ant the OH Driving style (heavy right foot) means it averages around 40mph, which I am disappointed with.

Window regulators are an issue on ours (2008) one replaced already and another on the way out. Expensive enough job.

Let us know what consumption you get on the 1.6

must be a VAG thing, I've had two regs go on my Octavia.

Well wear, OP. My current car wouldn't be my first choice, but my family size dictates it, so I know how you feel :)
