Heading to the west from Co Cork on Good Friday. sick and tired of going through the tunnel and over the north ring up the N20 to Limerick. Always ends up being a 1hr 45 minute journey.

I'm hearing through the grapevine that heading out on the M8 to mitchelstown tirning off and heading up through hospital onto the N24 and back into lmerick is faster. Any thoughts anyone?

Can you describe the proposed alternative in detail giving the moroway exits stc. Many thanks

there is other routhes but the one you take is the best and the better option.
its good road all the way and you make good time.

So the route on the M8 - Hospital is the one to go on?

From the Lee Tunnel to M8 junction 10 / N24 is about 45 minutes. From there, ca. 25 minutes to get to Tipp town and an extra 30 minutes to Limerick. And the N24 is rubbish.

you dont go near the N24 (except into Limerick) or Tipperary if you come off at Mitch and head via Hospital (as the OP is asking)

Its not a bad road at all for a R road

The OPs problem with the Mallow Charleville route is dragging round the city on The North Ring which is a pain at the best of times. He could almost be in Mitch before he gets tyo the Commons Inn on the other route!

Via Hospital is not always the best option, but if you are coming through the tunnel, it makes sense to go that way.

The route via Hospital is much quicker if you are coming from the Carrigaline direction as it is not half as busy as the N20. Therefore it is also much safer. By going the M8 you are out of cork city quickly and are on a motorway for most of the journey to the cork border. In fact when you hit mitchelstown Id say you might not be anywhere near Mallow depending on time of journey if you were driving the N20. Mitchelstown at peek can then be bypassed and while the Regional road can be narrow and windy in parts it is overall a very good road. You join the N24 north of caherconlish and hit the limerick bypass which may provide your first bottleneck (buttevant & charleville on the N20). Travelling north from Carrigaline this way is a no brainer.

folks, a no-brainer it certainly is. Knocked 15 minutes off my previous best time to limerick on the mitchelstown/ hospital route. did it in an hour and a half.
