still have a baby tooth, causing great concern and now starting to rot

    Hi everyone,

My story probably seems ridiculous to most but you would not believe how much I worry about this (have done for years) so I finally need to just face up to it because it is constantly on my mind.

Basically found out when I was 18 that I still had one of my baby teeth. I'm useless with the names of teeth so basically its the second tooth down from my front tooth on the right. I was sent to an ortho at the time who suggested having braces and allowing the tooth which was still in my palate, come down.

At the time I foolishly got really upset with the idea of braces and just refused to talk about it with anyone.

Now here I am at the age of 25, a full time student with very little funds (although I do have access to money if I feel its an emergency ) and wishing I had had the procedure done there and then and everything would be fine by now.

Anyway no point living with regrets I suppose... so here I am and my tooth is quite loose at this stage. Its been loose for a few years though so I still think it could last another few years since I'm so careful with it. But the big problem is that I recently noticed that its actually gone black at the back (you can't see it normally but if you look right into my mouth and back to the tooth you can see it clearly).

I'm actually terrified now it is starting to rot and that my whole tooth will go black soon. This would be a disaster as to be quite frank I do care about the aesthetics of my teeth and people always comment on how straight and lovely my teeth are so this is really driving me mad!

I'm so sorry for the long winded message, as you can probably tell this really is causing me great concern. To be honest I haven't been back to a dentist since I was 18 because of this, which is awful because I know I should be going regularly so my other teeth are probably suffering now because of this too.

I guess at this stage in my life I'm more mature and could handle braces, the only problem now is the cost! I don't really know mouch about implants, can anyone advise me of the pros/cons for them? How much would they normally cost?

Or does anyone know of any other option that might be open to me?

Also any reccommendations for a patient dentist?? At this stage I'm actually terrified of going to a dentist and letting them see how bad this has gone. I also have this awful fear that they will poke and prod at my little tooth and make it even looser before I've even made a decision!

I'm based in the south east, but have easy access to dublin too and to be honest am willing to travel to a dentist/specialist because this really is upsetting me so much I want it done right this time!

I'm genuinely mortified about this problem and about how immature I've been with it too but I can't really explain why, this is really just affecting me so badly :o

Thanks to anyone who has actually taken the time to read this gigantic message and thanks for any info/advice at all :)

Dentists spend all day looking at bad teeth! Your single rotting tooth isn't going to shock them. If it's a baby tooth, then you still have the other tooth right? Go to your dentist, only so much advise people can give you on a forum.

You don't have to get any procedures done on the day - just go for a checkup. It's 50 euro generally, or free if you've paid PRSI for the first one. Don't put it off - just take the plunge and get it sorted. You'll be happy when it's all done.
