    Hi,

I only have space for 50mm insulation. I was going to use 50mm kingspan, but funds are holding me back.

    My question is..

You know the way you can split 100mm rolls of rockwool/fibreglass in two. Could I use these as 50mm or would they provide very little insulation ?

is this a new build or existing

is it in a cavity or internally behind drylining?

Sorry should of been more descriptive.

Its in Log cabin. Already built. I've used 2x2 battens on the inside walls.

    re drylining log cabin
yes you could use 50mm, 50mm is a lot better than none;), the MOST important thing here is that you install a complete Vapour check(membrane to stop general house created vapour entering your timber wall structure) to the inside of the insulation behind the plasterboard, otherwise you risk having condensation forming in the wall. if money is that tight, your going to find the caulk, membrane etc expensive too:( but this should be done right

forget the block work in these images but look at the blue line- as thats your vapour check/ Air-barrier

Cheers for that. Yeah I understand the thing about VB.

Will there be a huge decrease in using this as opposed to the 50mm kingspan?

Should I go ahead and use this or hold on and wait till I can afford the kingspan ?
That question is probably like asking how long is a piece of string, but if it were you. What would you do ?
I would like to get it done soon though.

Can you buy 50mm fiberglass/rockwool ? Or is the smallest 100mm.

Lastly can rockwool be easily split into 50mm thickness. I've heard it just splits in the middle easily. Have never seen it though.

    Cheers

first of all, is this 50mm really a fixed measurement?

    1. define decrease? as regards thermal performance PIR (Kingspan or equivalent) is approx 1/3 better. however I would suggest that mineral wool (rockwool or equivalent) is better suited to timber frame construction
    2. given your financial constraints - rockwool
    3. I don't know, go to a builders providers and ask
    4. go to the builders providers and get a sample- if you separate 100mm batts, will you have 50mm on either side? I don't know

You can separate rockwoll but it is difficult and will get messy so make sure that you are all covered up and have goggles and a dust mask. (pretend that you are in an episode of CSI)
you will end up with it a biot uneven so budget for a larger area than you need as you will have to do a bit of patching.

You can get space blanket insulation which is about 50mm in a large orange builders providers so consider that too.

apologies I've changed this post as I was confusing the product with the layers of turkey foil being sold as insulation...
