This was on last Sunday - good doc but didn't really capture how fast these cars were, bar all the deaths of course. :o

First I would have to go to the garden to re-adjust my dish to 29E for Astra, while at the moment it points 13E Horbird.

However I think you can get BBC4 online from BBC website if you have UK IP address. This can be easily done using TOR, and I remember I once set it up, but then reinstalled the system and configuration was gone. Never had time to do it again.

Anyway back to topic - Group B cars was something which makes me sad I'm not a bit older, and regret I never had a chance to see them in real action.

You may need a bigger dish to enhance your chances of decent reception, BBC can be temperamental at times or refuse to work.

Motorised is the way to go, making sure the motor is strong enough for the job in the first place.

Yep, online will not let you watch it from here which is a pain in the ass  but a decent proxy should get around that like what you suggested :)

Goodness, all this on a motoring forum... :pac:

That program was epic in showing how quickly the cars developed in a short space of time (saw it on Sunday too)

Unfortunately Expat shield and similars, work only under Windows, while my windows died over 1.5 year ago and I didn't force myself to rescue it yet.
I've been using Linux since 1997, and since 1999 as my main operating system, so Windows is generally of very little use for me.
Setting up TOR to watch IPlayer was the quickest and easiest solution under linux AFAIR.

Dual OS here, Vista and Ubuntu 11.10. Ubuntu much easier to write programs with :D

Nice one. I've been dual booting linux/windows for the last 4-5 years. Rarely use windows nowadays. Must set up tor for Iplayer, but I'm a lazy sod.

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

I love the way they use pedals.
Doing the job with 2 feet, where you really need 3.

    Yea, some skillful driving.

To be honest, I'm surprised there was never more accidents in group b racing, especially with the spectators like that.

I watched that programme in awe on sunday. 131bhp to 500bhp cars in 3 years with no added safety for drivers or spectators. Spanish and Portugeuse are lunatics stepping out to touch the cars going past at full power on a bend.

There's a possibility your dish isn't big enough or the poor weather out is affecting the stability of your dish/ signal. Best to try it with a meter to see how good your reception is.

NPID and TPID (Network/Transponder Identifier) don't worry about those :)

FEC = Foreward Error Correction ie error checking. Some decoders use it...

    Edit: Channel 5

    10964khz Polarity Horizontal

    22000 symbol rate

    FEC 5/6

Does those group B cars still exist, and is anyone using them for any vintage rallies, etc?

A few years ago in the Trim car show there was a Peugeot 205 T16 lurking on a trailer. Then it started up... The sound was mind blowing

Someday someone has to bring a Lancia 037/ Delta S4. Someday...

The Group B rally cars always stand out in my mind as being tainted. Yes, they were fast, yes they were special, but I can't look at them with any fondness, affection or desire to see them rally. I think it was the video and circumstances of Henri Toivonen's death that turned me off completely.

Many of the cars were used (and ruined) in rallycross after they were banned so they are pretty rare now. Not all were banned either, the Opel Manta 400 and MG Metro 6R4 had great careers in domestic championships around Europe.

A famous photographer, Reinhard Klein has set up the Slowly Sideways club in Germany which allows owners of these Group B and other rare/special to run their cars as demonstration cars ahead of the main field on certain events. They regularly appear at Rally Deutschland and other tarmac WRC events.
    See Slowly Sideways
There is now an Irish branch who appear at several of the larger rallies north & south including the Rally of the Lakes, Lurgan Park, WRC Rally Ireland (when it existed) and several other events. They have a website, but mainly use facebook to communicate.
    See http://www.facebook.com/SlowlySidewaysIreland
basically any former works car, or interesting/rare/unique rally car is welcome.

So in short they do exist, and occasionally appear on the stages:D

As for the documentary I liked it, especially the footage, but it set out to prove the point that these cars were death machines, when the reality was that the organisation of the events was often the cause of these tragic accidents, while others were simply freak accidents. It was relying on shock tactics to push an agenda.

The funny thing is that the Group B's were banned for being too fast. Yes they were fast (stupidly fast in a straight line) but modern WRC cars are quicker when you compare stage times from back then to now.

The difference is the braking, tyre and suspension technology has moved on so much that comparitivly higher speeds are carried in the corners, making up for the power loss in modern WRC cars
