A quick search dug up this old thread:

Looking at new career opportunities and Customs is something that would appeal to me. Would I be right in guessing however that as it's a public sector position it'd be virtually impossible to get into that sector at the moment?

As per the thread above, do you still need to have worked in Revenue before you could land a role in Customs? How does one go about working for the Revenue and what sort of role would you need there in order to go to working for Customs?

You have to work in Revenue for at least 2 years. One question I would like answered is if anyone knows of course if say you worked in Revenue before for 1.5 years and then left would you just need to work another.5 years to qualify to apply for any positions?

Thanks Billy. Well I guess the question now is- how on earth do you go about getting a role within Revenue?

http://www.revenue.ie/en/about/careers.html Nothing available at the moment.

The only people I know who joined the revenue joined as graduates after college. I think they sat the civil service exams and were ranked.

My memory is a bit hazy on that though.

If you are looking to work in Revenue/Civil Service best thing to do is to register with www.publicjobs.ie this is where Public Sector jobs for Ireland and the EU are advertised.

There is some sample selection tests available on publicjobs under the heading advice centre which are worth a look.

I worked in customs as temp clerical officer and there where people from other government departments becoming customs officers. So i don't think you have to work in revenue but have to be in a civil service job. As far as i know you join the civil service and work there for 3 years in whatever department your sent to e.g. revenue, social welfare, justice etc and you send in an expression of interest form and then if an opportunity arises in customs you can apply for it. However this may have changed. Publicjobs is your first step anyway and the way things are looking it will be a while before the recruit for clerical officer, the recently recruited for graduate positions and may again in the future.

It stupid anyway, they should recruit in a way that you can apply for jobs in a specific department, rather than posting a job and the person could get sent to any department.
