What have they fixed?

All our troubles seem to have stemmed from a lack of regulation of the banking system but also, in light of the Mahon Tribunal, the political system. The Ivor Callaly debacle also highlighted a total lack of existing legislation to deal with any corrupt members of the Oireachtas.

So have our Government put any legislation in place that, if civil servants are totally incompetent in their jobs, bankers mess things things up again or members of the oireachtas are caught with their hands in the till, they can prosecuted?

If so, what exactly have they done?

Put increasing pressure on taxpayers to cough up more to compensate for the destruction of the country while blaming same taxpayers for 'partying'?

I'm sure they will tell you that they will in the next term in office as right now they are playing the cards that FF has dealt them!

FG and Labour have lost all and any respect they have from me, I just hope others wake up and see them for what they are.

I don't particularly like FG or Labour but I they are doing a good job in mopping up the mess that FF left .

The drunk puked all over the carpet and is now beating the cleaning staff and telling them that they aren't cleaning it up properly.

So let's not pretend that FF didn't cause the mess .

However I do agree with the op. Callely , Bertie, Lowry , Flynn etc still running around with no actions against them .

Could we keep this thread on topic and not have another let's rant about FF for ever and ever thread?

The thread is about what exactly have this Government done, or are in the process of doing.

I was a bit worried I'd posted a bum question when it was not getting any replies. :o

But the lack of posts could mean that, to anyone's knowledge, they haven't fixed anything yet.

Could that really be the case? Are we so stupid we could let them do this to us again and still leave all the guilty parties unaccountable?

    God help us all!

Or...now this is just a possibility...the thread has absolutely no substance and that's why nobody has replied.

There has been very little change because whenever the word 'change' is mentioned, so are the words 'industrial action'.

So to answer your question, I'm sure the Government would love to come in and cut and slash this and that and still be in with a chance of re-election. But that isn't the reality at all in Ireland. In fact, the lack of reality among the populace would seem to me to be what is standing in the way of true change.

Look at the household charge debacle. How would you go about cutting staff and services when half the country practically revolts over the slightest change in taxation? Despite how sensible the change is.

I think the reason your not getting any replies is your user-name is very apt.

    .

Perhaps the OP was asking about financial regulation, although when ever it's mentioned so are the words "capital flight".

Or perhaps he was asking about accountability and transparency, which again wont happen in such a small country. I wonder how many politicians, gardai and journalists got no questions asked loans or mortgages from anglo. I'm sure they're just rushing to expose and correct the situation just as Lab and FG are rushing to investigate their own councillors.

No. I'm asking what legislation has been put in place so that if ever we find ourselves in this position again, the guilty parties - regulators, politicians and bankers - will be found accountable and punished?

And if it isn't in place, why not? (Dirk Gently has given his opinion, any others?)

When you start taking on water in a boat, you dont sit down and plan how to prevent it in the future, instead you get a bucket and start bailing out the water(no pun intended). We are still taking on water, and the government is working to reduce expenditure, and improve the tax take.

As soon as the Troika have stopped breathing down their/our necks, then they can start on reform, and protective measures.

serious question, Do you genuinely believe that?

Which bit? Do I believe the Troika will stop breathing down our necks? Eventually, yes. Do I honestly believe they will start reform of the system. I believe there will be some reforms, both here and at an EU level. As others have intimated its not as easy as one thinks between the unions and the other vested interests. I'm also not too sure what they can do. If a sitting government wants to go on a spending spree, they will.

cant believe how f.g supporters and members will continue to spin the line about the great job they are doing in goverment. when the truth of the matter this goverment is no difference than the last and will continue to follow policies that keep them in the lifestyle which they have become accustomed to. they are only interested in glorification of the party. they will never put the countries interests ahead of the parties

I believe there was so much corruption that none of our present leaders want to see it dragged through the courts proper. We will probably have to wait till the next generation of politicians for decent standards to be the norm. And its up to the younger generation to have zero tolerance for political shysters. We are still a banana republic.

Just look at the sort of politicians we have. Bungling Phil leaning heavily on the Irish people to pay the household tax.. all the while he won't pay the same thing on his Portugal home. That sadly is the standard of Politician we have here.
