New job not sure what to do

    Hey guys

I have been offered a job on a graduate programme and the company want me to sign a contract asap.

The only problem is that I have my heart set on two or three other grad programmes which haven't called anyone for interview yet.

I am reluctant to say no to the job offer I have on the table now just in case i don't get offered one of the other preferences. But what happens if I do get offered one of my preferences and have already signed the contract for the job offer?

Is it easy to get out of a contract you have signed with another company?

None of the jobs will be starting until September so I would be able to give plenty of notice to the company.

I am pretty sure that if I got offered one of my preference jobs, I would never need to go back to the company I have a current offer with, as it is in a different industry so would not be too worried about burning any bridges so to speak.

Yes, it's called resigning ;) People do it all the time. Just check the notice period.

That's the key bit. Take the job. Behave like you're not going to get the others, until you actually do. Just in case you don't.

    Cheers for that

Is it technically resigning if I won't have started the job?

I have the feeling I am doing some one else out of the job if I take it and then leave it within the next couple of weeks

It is possible you could love the job you've been offered. :)

In my experience (about 15 years work experience) it is mostly the people & atmosphere that make the job likeable, so you never know what you're getting into until you work there.

For example, I used to work for a really famous software company which would be on most people's "want to work there" list, but the place was seriously toxic. On the other hand my next job was for another super famous software company and I loved it 'cause the people were sound, even though I thought the work was boring and unchallenging.

Another example, I met my (long term) girlfriend at my previous job, even though it was a job I didn't really want but took out of necessity.

So what I am saying basically is... you never know what you're getting yourself into.

I think thats fine if you are looking at jobs in the same sector.
In this case the job I have been offered is in Business yet i'm an engineer and want to continue on that career path if possible. The two preferences are both in Engineering.

If it was a case that the job offer was in the same area as I want, then it would be a far harder choice as to which job I would want more.

At the moment Business would be my second choice and I would probably keep looking for a job in engineering anyway even if I do end up working in business for the time being.

I wouldn't worry too much - depending on the company they'd probably just go to whoever was next on the list. Most contracts have a probation period initially where they can let you go at little/no notice anyway.

I say take it and if something better comes up, resign and take the better job. If you don't get another offer at least you have something in the interim.
