Difficult to make my mind

Hello Boardie :), I am thinking about changing my car, I am looking for a car that will last forever, will never go to a garage, will do me 45+ MPG, max 2.0 and since I only do 10k miles per year I don't mind if it is petrol or Diesel.

I am in no hurry as I have a car, I have been looking for a long time and I talked with different people and so far my choices are:

    - Volvo S40 2004+ 1.6 or 1.9
    - Golf 1.9 TDI 110/130 bhp or 2.0 s SDI
    - Passat 1.9 S Tdi 110 bhp
    - Audi A3 1.9 TDI 90/110 bhp
    - BMW 320D

I ruled out the Audi A4 as I had one in the past.

Obviously each one of us has it's own preference but what I would like to know are the pros and cons, the reliability, any major issue in one of those models and finally what's your own choice and why? thanks boardies :D.

None of the above is likely to be particularly reliable. How much do you want to spend?

If reliability is one of your priorities start looking at Japaese cars the usual suspects Toyota, Honda, Mazda and Nissan

@ anan1: I am surprised that you said none of these is reliable, can you just tell me why please? max 10k

@ Littlehorny: Thanks for your advice, I really have an issue with japs cars, I much prefer German cars and the Volvo (Swedish), I will never buy a Jap or French car

@ Nissan doctor: hhh can guarantee you that this is not an april fool, maybe I exaggerated a bit by saying will last forever/never go to a garage but you know what I meant :), a decent car that will last for long time with minimum money spent on a garage for a silly recurrent fault.

You list some VAG cars and a BMW and state that you want reliability and cheap running/repair costs.

Its been 20 years since those criteria applied to German cars, but then there are not many cars on the road these days that anyone could say would be flawless.

Based on your criteria then I'd recommend a Toyota Avensis 1.6 petrol. But if you want German you need to see what you prioritise first. I'd have one of the older TDI's with a FSH tbh.

A Mazda 6 1.8 petrol would be one of the most trouble free cars out there, it won't do 45+mpg, nor will most full size petrol saloons but I don't see that being an issue for the mileage your planning on.

You want a reliable car and won't buy a car from the country that makes the most reliable cars. If you insist on avoiding Japanese how about Korean?

Why don't you want an A4 when you've picked 2 of its twins?

@ 166man : I thought about that, which year will you recommend and which model plz

@ del2005 : VW and Audi are reliable cars, I had a golf in the past and the only problem I had was about the battery, few bits and bobs here and there but nothing major, petrol engine and did around 33 MPG, had a volvo S40 first generation, no problem with the car at all, diesel engine and if my memory is good did about 40 mpg, sold it and it's still running now, had an A4 1.9 TDI and had to bring it to a garage on 1 occasion but apart from that it's a lovely car, really loved it. so german cars (based on my experience) are reliable also.

didn't pick an A4 as my second half has one and i don't want to buy the same car.

@ red bull : It did cross my mind to buy a Skoda but I keep thinking that they are made with VW/Audi's left over parts :D
