Join a club - ideally one that puts on it's own races (or puts them on in conjunction with other clubs), get a Club Competition licence (the minimum licence requirement) and race in the club leage to start off with

You could then progress to open races (A4 category to start) - this would require a full competition Cycling Ireland licence, but you can get one-day licences at the open races

I would strongly advise following the route set out by Beasty but you could

    - check out the list of events on cyclingireland.ie (you would be looking for open road races with an a4 category, preferably where there is a separate A4 race)
    - rock up to one
    - pay a tenner for a one-day licence and another tenner to enter

I would defo suggest get some group riding experience under your belt before racing in a group. Learn to brake gently, move gently, take corners and shout obsticles. Don't racewith tri bars (or blindingly short tri shorts either*)

    unless you're a lady ;)
