I think notices come within 2-3 weeks. They're very efficient. But, it can be up to 3 months.

what do you mean? it had the marking and everything on the back of it i just presumed it was when i saw the markings, hopefully im completely wrong tho

If it was red and you're sure it was a Gatsa, then it was a survey van. They can't issue fines, so you're ok. The Garda ones can be unmarked but afaik they are all white, the private ones must be marked.

Phew i taught they could issue fines now aswell, is it just a warning letter in the post or does anything come in

If it was a survey van then you will get nothing in the post. However take it easy around that stretch because if enough people speed there whilst the van is there, they will have a proper van out in the coming weeks to get people to slow down and save lives generate revenue.

Nope, to apply to make an area a designated speed camera zone, they must prove that a certain percentage of drivers speed in that area and it is an accident blackspot, they use survey vans to prove this.

All the Gatso vans have been decommissioned, it was either a Gosafe "AGD" or a Garda "Multanova ROBOT" van

As far as I know they only got the contract if they agreed to provide survey hours, to the best of my knowledge this means they survey speed in areas and if a certain percentage are speeding then the speed limit is examined and may be revised.
OP: You stated in an earlier post you saw the markings, if it had any markings it will indeed issue fines, the survey ones have no markings they are just a van with a camera inside. However, you will probably be safe at that speed because your speedo will over-read a bit and they are giving some kind of an allowance as far as I know.

Personally i would just slow down abit ?

I completely missed the bit about the markings, if it had markings on the back, you could be receiving a nasty letter in the post from the RSA. Survey vans are completely unmarked.

The nasty letters come from the Gardai, they have a special office in Thurles for it, I have a letter with the address here if you're interested :o

There are red and white ones around Waterford, If you saw it , it saw you unfortunatley. They can detect from quiet far away. Where it takes the picture varies. If you were in the 60km/h zone by where they usually hide around the holycross in Butlerstown your in bother. If you were in the 80km/h zone on the north road to tramore and only doing 87km/h, you might get lucky.

So there were probably at the top of that hill before the Fenor turn off, If your clock said 87km/h and thats all, theres a good chance you might be ok.
Their on that road and the one's around Waterford pretty regularly. id be takin her handy. never mind with the amount of tractors that will be turnin up on that road from now onwards.

OP, you need to slow down and start learning from the points you have. Keep going that way and you will be off the road soon enough, so far you are half way there, could be nearer after that van. 3 more, maybe 2 more fines and you out...

and if I was in the position of seeing that van while being over the limit, I would start expecting the points.

It would appear he already has the lesson learnt

Good, took him some time though.

Out of interest, 12 point mean off the road for how long? - not a dig at op, just can't remember and too lazy to google it....:)

I think its 6 months I saw somewhere but I'm not certain it could be more. Not sure what happens the points then, but it wouldn't look good when renewing insurance

    From Garda.ie

    Penalty Points

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is responsible for the allocation of Penalty Points. After payment of a Penalty Point offence, a letter of Notification of the Allocation of Penalty Points will then be issued by post from the RSA confirming the allocation of Penalty Points on your driving licence record, and the date your points start

I don't get what you're point is? The letter comes from the Gardai in relation to the offence, you pay the fine or go to court, 28 days after you pay the points go on your license and this is when the RSA write to you, they apply the points and notify you from what date and when it ends.

I thought it was only fines from the Gardaí that went through the fixed charge office, I haven't got any though so I'm not sure. Anyway we've gone completely off topic.

Sorry to burst your bubble but not all Go safe vans are plastered with Slow down signs, pictures of cameras and reflective stickers. I've seen a plain red one outside Tullamore once and the only marking it had was a sticker on it's side saying 'Speed Camera Van' or something to that effect. It was certainly one of the GoSafes because it had the bulge over the back door.
If the van that you saw had that then I'm afraid you were most likely speed checked.

    This too shall pass.

That's not bad luck, it's comeuppance. :) You are obviously not slowing down. 87 on an 80kmph road in not slowing down. Sorry, but I think if you already have 6 points you need to be taught a hard lesson - particularly with the death rate on that road.
