Watching the above seasons of the x files, for the "mythology" episodes (stopped watching after season 7)which are helpfully marked in the episode guides on wikipedia. Aside from the "mythology" episodes which standalone episodes are worth watching in those seasons?

In my experience, years 8 and 9 are generally divisive amongst core fans of the show. Be it, no Mulder, no X Files, outright hatred of Doggett, season 9 sucks balls, etc. It's 10 years or so since I've watched the show in any consistent manner, so I may be being a little rose tinted, but I've a fairly positive memory of 8 certainly. Granted, the mythology was up its own hole and didn't get any less convoluted towards the end, but I liked Robert Patrick's character a lot and felt there was a positive shift in the tone of the show, less light-hearted somehow and a new lease of life. Again, this could just be overly positive memories. Season 9 is a difficult one. Some write it off altogether, but for me year 9 is slightly unfortunate. It's post Sept 11th, it's partly experimental in that they cut back on Scully's screen time, it was going to be Gillian Anderson's last season and they sort of hand over the reins to Doggett and Reyes. Some people were never, ever going to like this new direction and these things take a while to settle down. Granted, they had a season to sort it, but I feel they were a bit stuck and just didn't get to iron out some of the creases.

I really must do a full rewatch as I have the whole lot on TV, but I don't want to do it on a small computer screen.

I finished a re-watch of the entire 9 seasons a few months ago.

I was disappointed with both 8 and 9. Nothing against the new blood but they just didn't do it for me. Dropping Mulder for over a season and a half ( from what I remember ) was a major mistake.

I loved every minute of seasons 1-7 but I found 8-9 a chore to finish off. If I was to do another re-watch, I probably wouldn't bother with 8 and 9.

I think Duchovny started to get bored around season 6. He left after 7/bits of 8.

Patience,Badlaa,Medusa,Vienen,Alone(8),4D,Hellbound(9) are decent standalone MOTW style episodes that I remember from those 2 seasons.Although neither season was consistently great viewing, I would say that season 8 at its worst was not quite as bad as season 9 at its worst. Some truly awful rubbish in that season.Rather appropriately one of the final episodes in season 9 was called Jump the Shark.

I watched season 1-5 and the first movie and thought the show was fantastic, but half way through season 6 I just gave up on it...

I'm just wondering is there much worth watching in seasons 6-9? I've heard the last episode doesn't really give much closure.

But season's 1-5 and the first movie, genuinely some of the best tv ever(mainly the mythology episodes)

I enjoyed it all the way to the end of season seven. That would have been a near perfect ending from what I remember. Watched the start of season eight but lost interest and skipped to about episode 15 of season nine. Watch to the end of season seven at least.
