    Hi,
Wondering if anybody has any ideas on how much I can expect to pay for a timing belt change on a 06 523i manual.its not a BMW garage so I expect a slightly better price but would very much appreciate some ball park figures. Is it worth getting more quotes than the one I'll be getting from a garage on Monday and can anybody recommend any garages individuals who are tried and tested.cheers.
    Gary.

They have no belt just a chain. You don't replace chains under normal circumstances.

That engine is chain driven, no belt. Why do you say it needs changing? Mileage?

As has been said its a chain and shouldn't need changing unless somethings gone wrong with the engine. I don't think any BMW use a timing belt.

Is this your first BMW? I'm presuming the car you had before had a belt!

Sorry I meant chain.it has 80k mls on it but for the last while now it has been running a little strange.engine light is on and it cuts out at idle a lot of the time..when it does run at idle it feels like its running on less cylinders or misfiring and running rough.garage has said today that it's the timing chain.wonder would the diagnostic kit show this or is it a mechanics conclusion.am I talking in the 1000s?i fooking suppose so...

Was the correct grade of oil used at each service and was it always serviced on time?

I know the guides can sometimes give issues, recently had to do a chain on the aul lads car due to the wrong oil being used which was great fun

If the guide is giving in then it could lead to a rough idle and misfire, changing a chain can be pricey and could be over the 1k mark

I'd make sure it has been diagnosed properly before you go spending on a new chain.

They need to be diagnosed by some one who understands the engine properly as the valvetronic system often gives trouble which can cause issues like you describe. The timing chain tensioners can also fail however and BMW have a redesigned replacement which solves the problem.

Either system requires very specific tools to service so make sure your guy has them.

You may just have yet another expensive German on your hands. Would worry about the timing belt slip.. Are you a bit vague concerning cars?

Based on posts from other users, would this be the type of problem you'd being to scully auto care in fairview? OP appears to be north Dublin based, so ideally located.
