How long do drum breaks last doing normal driving about 1200 miles per year.

1200 miles per year is 100 miles per month, so just over 3 miles per day.
With such mileage your drum brakes will last forever.

They'll last till they seize up!! :)

(Not joking either, the automatic adjusters on the handbrake will likely seize up and then the shoes go out of adjustment, handbrake lever way up and so on!!)

That's right, they will probably last the life of the car, unless it's French. Their linings have an occasional habit of falling of the shoes and jamming the brakes.

BTW: I am assuming (like everyone I think) that the drum brakes are on the back wheels.

You were right, I find that mistake irritating too, I've even seen it in an advert placed by a main Audi dealer in the midlands.

Unless its a typo, doing that sort of mileage a year will cause different issues for drum brakes then high mileage.

The shoe linings will not wear out, but what will likely happen, due to the lack of heat build up, is corrosion will effect the springs and handbrake mechanism, as well as the shoe linings themselves(they can get brittle and crack).

The rubber seals in the brake cylinders are also likely to perish and cause leaks.

I generally expect 60,000 miles from rear brake shoes, but if mileage is as low as 1200 miles per year expect problems with rust, condensation & dust build up. I worked on a nct failure today, new shoes fitted 2 years (4000 miles) ago, 3500 miles since last nct, failed on rear brake imbalance. There was a huge amount of dust built up in left drum. The car is normaly parked where the sun only shines on drivers side. I cleaned out the dust and suggested a long drive before re-testing, or replacing shoes.

Its still depends on far to many variables. The same is true of asking how long any wareable part will last, tyres, brakes etc.....you could get 60k, I might get 100k from the same car.

I replaced the rears in our 00 Corolla estate, they were the stock shoes.
    107k miles on it.

Depends on how & where you drive. If you mostly drive open roads, there'll be little wear on them so they'll prob seize up before they wear out. If you drive mostly in town, and are on & off the brakes all the time, they will wear considerably more quickly. If you tend to use the handbrake to perform "advanced" manoeuvres:rolleyes:, that could wear them more quickly again.

I put 200k on a set in a starlet. Changed them before selling it and there was actually a bit left on em!!

Once your rear drums sound like Brian Johnson it's time to take a look at the shoes.

We got 150,000 miles out of the drum shoes but noticed a small drop in pressure at the pedal.

The piston seals can wear over time and spring a leak, both of ours started leaking at 8 years old, picked up by NCT. We replaced both seals and the shoes were still ok. Nearly 250,000 km on the car now, next NCT Sept.

I would recommend that at 8 years of age the drum should be inspected.

:eek:The drum brakes are(read should be) inspected at every service.

Yes I agree, how many garages do it in a regular service. The point is that at 8 years you start to see piston rubber perishing.
