Suction Sucks!

I've a few suction mounts and they all seem to suffer from the same problem, if the weather changes, like with the heat we had the last few days, they drop off the window. I've a pretty heavy object mounted on one and not only is it suction, but there's an adhesive around the edge of the suction part too, I think that part melted a little and the thing fell off. Any suggestions of something else to use to get a better suction, or just something to stick the object to the window without risking damage to the window on removal? I think putting a bit of liquid in the suction cup itself helps a little, but not enough..

    Any feedback appreciated :)

Maybe use some thing like baby oil or vaseline. Seriously.

The suction cup is falling off cos the moistures gone. There's no easy way to suggest two products like those.

Also, if you put a suction cup on when it cooler, the heat might cause the air in it to expand, that could be part of the problem.
    Or they're just crap.:D

Bit offensive to the users of After Hours, you really shouldn't make sweeping comments like that about another forum

Baby oil is the job in this situation Cormie

Actually, baby oil is useful in this case, as it's a mineral oil it keeps the seal tight without any rubber degradation.

Is the window perfectly clean before you try to attach the suction cups? Give it a wipe with alcohol to clean the area before you attach to, that will remove all the crap from the screen so you can get a good seal.

BTW it may be better to look for a different way of mounting heavy items. While it will be fine for driving, it won't be good enough if bad stuff happens.

Thanks for the suggestions, would baby oil really help? Would any oil do the same, olive oil etc? Would be nice if there was something else that wouldn't suffer the same problem which I could use in conjunction with the suction cup itself?

Ugh, can't believe I'm about to say this. I generally give my one a good licking. It's been on for near 5 months trouble free.

Clean the window with vinegar -its a mild acid so should shift any grime that's breaking the seal.

Pick up some 3M tape/glue and put it under the suction cups. I've an onboard camera on my dash and I'm using 3M tape on it.

Have 3m tape holding my camera and toll tag up also, might see if I can get a few strips for the suction cups too. I've something quite heavy being held up by a suction cup but it fell down in the heat.

Not sure if it will be any use to you but, how about one of these?

I have one for my phone (Galaxy S2) and the magnet is ridiculously strong. If I try pull the phone straight off I end up with the phone in my hand and the back cover still stuck to the magnet. The adhesive holding the magnet in place to the car is also particularly strong and is showing no signs of coming loose. Granted I have it on plastic and not on a window but might be worth a punt?

Thanks for the suggestion, had a look at the vidjo and although it's pretty nifty, I don't think it would suit for my application (the suction mount of one of the heavy things I have is also used as its position adjuster).

Was the baby oil suggestion a joke or real? If real, I'll probably try it after giving the windscreen/mount a wipe down of vinegar/alcohol and then maybe a 3m strip holding it down too :)

Baby oil suggestion is for real, the reason it falls off is the rubber drys out, the moisture creates a seal between the cup and the glass, also when the rubber drys out it warps, creating a vacuum leak. Smjust a thin layer of baby oil will do the trick.

Cool stuff :) I haven't any baby oil to hand, will any oil do the trick? Olive, coconut etc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

    No idea.

    Just read this: http://www.ehow.com/way_5990252_way-suction-cups-stick-window.html

they recommend using skin oil, as in rubbing my fingers on my face and then on the suction cup :)

I recommend 3M double sided tape. I have my steel reg plates attached to the car bumper, and I swear, Chuck Norris himself couldnt pull them babies off.

Careful, he posts here, he might just lift your car up by the reg plate and roundhouse kick it into orbit!;)

yeah, I think I'll clean, oil and then put strips from the plastic down to the window :)

Where can you buy the 3m strips? I've only ever got them with stuff, can't recall seeing them anywhere on their own.

Just drill a hole in the windscreen and bolt it on.

Get the oil from the creases where your nose meets your face.

This is obviously the best solution for you, as its free. :)
