    hi all,

been offered a toyota avensis with 80k miles on it for 6.5k, with a bit of haggling that might even be less. its clean and straight I think.

gearbox didn't seem to have much feel to it are all avensis like this

also its a 1.6petrol a 2005 model one like this, what mpg are they good for? would they do 40mpg?

its not this one but one like it
    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/3036361

Im a pretty typical driver, and will be doing a mix of main roads and short trips

    any weak points on these?

It depends on how you drive - friend of mine used to have one and he would get 28-35 mpg. He had a pretty heavy foot though.
I'd say 40 mpg is possible but it would be hard to get that.

Btw, what year is the one you're looking at?

I reckon 25mpg is more realistic. They are a dreadful car with that engine.. Its overpriced too.

According to the advert it has 110,000 miles not 80,000 miles either.

The 1.6s are not good on fuel economy on main roads and especially the motorway because that engine is too small for the size of the car.

Also 5k is too much for an 05 Avensis... Let alone6.5k

I have one you will see 40s on the open road but mid 20s in town, most reliable car i have owned.

Similar to an Evo driven with a degree of restraint ;)

We had one before we changed to diesel she did 36-37mpg now we live a mile and a half from the school so this was done nearly twice every day also GAA Soccer in the village etc the rest would journeys of 10-20 miles with the odd long run

It's possible to get 40mpg if you don't go over 100kmph and don't drive it around town. I've seen trip computers that say averages of late 30s, but I never ever got that and I had doznes of them as company cars. Depends on how you drive I suppose. early 30s would be more realistic I'd say.

OP, do yourself a favour and look at the 1.8 litre instead. I got about 33mpg out of mine when I had one, a bit more power than the 1.6 and similar fuel economy. Also €6.5k for a 05 is mental money.

Here is a 06 1.8 higher spec Luna asking €5,700 with 2 years NCT:

The 1.8s are much better, more power, better mpg because the engine has sufficient power to move the car around and a much better spec and nicer interior.

They're also quieter at speed because they run at lower revs on the motorway.

thats not the one I was interested in, as I said in my original post, but its the same model

Yeah OP, as the lads here are saying, the price on that Avensis is way off.
To give you a comparison, I'm looking at an 07 diesel Luna Avensis for not much more than that.
