Get a garage to employ/sponsor you, then register with Fas. Getting the garage is the tough part now as effectively you need them to employ you for 4 years.

I was wondering could anyone give me any advice on how I could become an apprentice mechanic? All I've ever wanted to do is work with cars from a young age, the problem is I dont personally know any mechanics that could give me a job as an apprentice and that seems to be the way most people get them. Im 22 and live in Dublin and I've been looking for a while now, I learned how to drive at 17 and I have all the basic knowledge of how cars work as well as the interest and enthusiasm, but just need someone to take me on and teach me everything I need to know to be a mechanic. If theres any mechanics there that can help or someone who can point me in the right direction it would be appreciated. Thanks.

To be fair if you are as interested as you claim to be I'm struggling to align that with you never having applied for an apprenticeship and seemingly not having a clue how to. Now admittedly roles are few and far between but over the last few years they wouldn't have been non existent.

I know I have to get a garage to take me on first, then actually register as an apprentice wth FAS but getting a garage to do that seems to be next to impossible. I've only been in contact with small business's so far and was thinking of applying to some of the bigger players like Opel, VW etc. even the likes of Advance Pitstop and places like that might be in a better position

Would you consider the defence forces?

    Step 1: Do out a sh!t load of cv's

Step 2: Visit all garages. Personally I'd prefer to work with big main stealer's like German makes or even specialists, I would not really be interested in a small independent garage.
But if your desperate do it.

Step 3: Ask for the service manager(no one else!). Talk to him/her, ask him/her if they are busy. Tell them you have been on the look out to start an apprenticeship and are interested in cars. Your 22 so you are mature enough.

Step 4: If you get the apprenticeship in the garage you may be put on a 3 month trial. Mechanics is not for everyone, you need to be mechanically minded. If you see a Ferrari flying down the road like it, it dosen't necessary mean you like the mechanics aspect of cars. You genuinely have to be interested in how things work.

Step 5: If you are good they will register you with FAS and FAS will bring you on an induction and they take it from there.

Best of luck and don't work for a cnut but maybe you may not have a choice. It will take about 4 years to complete(Took me 4 years and a half years). Speaking of which I'll be qualified Monday:)
