Previous employment and Garda recruitment

Hi all, I need some advice.

I was let go from my job 4 weeks ago but I don’t think I was fairly treated to put it mildly. I won’t get into the details but I have been to see SIPTU and have been advised that I can bring my previous employer to court for unlawful dismissal under the Industrial Act (I wasn’t there a full year).

Being honest, I am not overly concerned about the whole situation. As far as I am concerned it is water under the bridge and while it was tough to go through at the time I am now in another job and things are going good for me. So personally I would not want to do anything about it.

But, on the other hand, I am worried that my being let go from the job might go as a black mark against me in my long term goal which is to hopefully become a member of An Garda Síochána, when the recruitment ban is lifted.

So, I’m not sure if I should bring my previous employer to court to try and clear my name or if I should just leave it. Either way there is nothing monetary at the end of it. I just really, really do not want this to affect my possible future with An Garda Síochána.

Should I just leave it or do I try and clear my name?

    Thanks in advance.

How old are you if you don't mind me asking?

You where left go from your job, you didn't kill someone! so need to stress about name clearing! :) put down your employer in your job history on form B (if your lucky enough to reach that stage) you will be asked in a interview about all previous employment and you can explain then what happened and what action you took,

you will be fine once you work and are not on the dole at the time of application. Most of all dont worry! your not going to be cuffed and dragged out while you testify your innocence on the matter :) and if your really interested in joining An Garda Siochana try joining the reserves first and see if policing is even for you, its gonna be donkeys before recruitment for full time service will start. Can I also ask what age you are ? you sound like an overenthusiastic 12 year old :D

I thought all the snobbery about being on the dole was gone from this country. Considering nearly half million are signing on.
I was on the dole when I applied and seeing im on the panel it didn't affect me.
So, it makes no difference whatsoever, everyone has different reasons and a lot of hard working people are out of working it travelling abroad to look after their families.

I'm not slating anyone who is on the dole and wants to apply to AGS! the op obviously wants to increase his chances of getting in. So I gave my opinion of trying to be employed at the time of application as it can only stand to you. it was my opinion of which I'm entitled to! obviously your way was different and it worked for you so well done. Hopefully in the not so distant future you will get the call.

Cheers mate, didn't mean to have a go. But just thought your advice about not being on the dole was way off the mark.
Just aswell the country and recruitment boards are open minded because I've applied for 100's of jobs and always got shot down for having a construction background.
If your good enough and want it you'll get it.
Patience will pay off for us all eventually

Have just heard they have scrapped the DFB panel. Spend of €300k and then to leave people hanging in hope for 5 years. Disgraceful .

Will it be the Garda panel next. Hope not as I know a lot of posters on this board are waiting for the call up.

If you get left go, in the form br they will ask what employer you have been dismissed from and reasons why, or simply don't state that you have been dismissed, HQ won't look into it. They'll take a word from A local super
