Back in 2000, the 316i and 318i both used a 1.9 litre engine, except the 318i was slightly more powerful. Since you are paying the same motor tax and fuel economy is the same why not seek out a 318i?

Of better still go for a 01 facelifted model which will have the more powerful and fuel efficent 2.0 litre engine.

    Slow & basic spec

Depends on where you are coming from and what you expect from a car.....

bazz is right i had a E36 316i compact nippy little car for a learner:D
but yes the only difference between the 316i and the 318i is the 316 is an 8 valve and the 318 is a 16 valve i think there is about a 40hp difference in them. they are a good car untill something goes wrong in them, it can get expensive quick. so make sure you get a good one and service it regularly.

I think the OP is looking at the E46. A 2000 E46 316i had 104bhp, 318i had 116bhp, both were 8v and pretty poor even for the time.

There was only a difference of 13 bhp before 2001. After that there was a gap of around 30 - 143 for the 2.0 318i vs 115 for the 1.8 316i. Before 2001 they both had a 1.9 eight valve lump - 105 bhp for the poverty spec 316i and 118 for the nearly poverty spec 318i.

Personally I wouldn't bother with any four cylinder from that era, the diesel has plenty of power but way too much goes wrong with them, just go straight for a six pot petrol (320i upwards) and be done with it:)!
