Why do people whore for "thanks" on Boards? Do you get a special reward/title if you get a certain amount?

Being thanked a lot isn't a dilemma you will ever have to personally grapple with, I would imagine.

Fcuk all really, apart from a load of thanks.

It went on before the thanks feature was ever introduced and the best compliment you could hope to get was to be quoted and +1 or QFT

The best posters still shone through, they don't need thanks to stand apart

Some people are witty, some try too hard

You get a shiny hat and you get to wear it all day. It is a great honour.

Or maybe you just get feel like a smug bastard for a while... I forget which one it is.

On my old account, when i hit the top 5 of the "most thanked" list i got AIDS.

    Didn't see that coming.

Getting thanks for my posts gives me a sense of enormous well being and then I'm happy for the rest of the day, safe in the knowledge that there will always be a bit of my heart devoted to it (Boards life).

I think the 'Thanks From' should be automatically hidden. It can be annoying when going through the YLYL thread and seeing blocks of usernames.

Simply click the Thanks From bar to see it expand if you wish. Makes for neater Boards.

Thanking every post on this thread without reading them:pac:

    Cheers OP

Plus, it's nice to thank and be thanked.

I traded mine in for an Arduino Mega a while back. Took 1000 thanks to get it

Just boards' way of rewarding people for their positive contributions

It's just a thumbs-up button - for people to indicate that they like the post, nothing more. It is used in countless discussion/social media forums, but for some reason, it has led to a Greek tragedy of analysis and butt-hurt here (mostly from people who don't get much thanks - kinda like sex). It saves on reams of "Brilliant post! :D"

I think if it were changed to "thumbs up" instead of "thanks" there'd be less of the paranoia.

Easily done, touch.boards already has this.

You get 50 All Gold scratchcards for every 1,000 thanks you get.

Why do you assume people fish for thanks?

I assume everyone just posts because something occurs to them to write, be it a joke or a contribution to a serious discussion, without thinking too much about it. That's how I roll anyway.

Maybe people who don't get many thanks could be made exempt from thanks, so you could never thank their posts, and there'd be a little message saying they're exempt from getting thanks on each of their posts. That way, people would never see how few thanks they get, and they wouldn't have to get so obsessed with thanks.

But I don't get the obsession with thanks: if you don't like "thanks whoring" posts, do you also hate people making jokes in real life? If not, why is it different on the internet?
Do you complain when someone makes a bad joke in real life that they're "laugh whoring?"

Hold your horses there. I was mainly referring to fellow Boardsies constantly accusing others of "thanks whoring" and merely wondered if there was any benefit to receiving multiple "thanks".

I assumed you thought some posters were thanks whores:

Anyway, I think very few people whore for thanks. I don't really see the benefit of getting lots of thanks. It can feel nice but there are more fulfilling things to do, so I don't think people consider how many thanks they might get when they post.

If people were trying to get thanks, I imagine it would come across as forced and the result would get few if any thanks. So I say leave thanks as they are, as it's normally the witty or informative posts, and the occasional psychotic extreme right-wing revenge fantasy, that get the most thanks.

It's handy for me as I am never bothered checking replys to my posts I really couldn't care but if something has been thanked I go back to check if there was a response as its merely an indicator that someone has engaged with your comment otherwise its just hit or miss with me seeing replies. It's basically someone agreeing with or highlighting your post nothing special at all.

Go on, I bet you can't.

I miss the old reputation system, where you could give posts a thumb down if you didn't think it was worthwhile.

    Sorely needed in After Hours.

Having lots of 'Thanks' give you an opportunity to post something mildly amusing & extremely smug about your own received 'thanks' in these threads that crop up every few months.

E.G. When you reach 5,670 'Thanks', you become 20% more awesome for 1 day.

It depends on where the thanks was received and what the context was - to me it means someone agreed with my point or enjoyed a post. Other than that, I don't know.
