Has anyone gone abroad to seek work whilst collecting SW?

I had a consultation with FAS and they said that this was a possibility to claim I think it was 11 weeks of Social Welfare payment whilst searching for work in an EU country. I'd be interested in this except I can't really seem to find a good source of information on it. Probably due to not really knowing the programme's name.

Basically, I'd like to know if it was possible to try different cities in the period and how the payments were claimed.

You can transfer Jobseeker's Benefit, but not Allowance, to another EU country.
You have to supply your social welfare office with your address in the other EU country, and register with the social welfare office in the other EU country within 7 days of moving. You are supplied with a form from your social welfare office here for the EU country, when you register they then send a form back to social welfare here who will then pay you into your bank. You have to sign on every month in the EU country and they send a form back to here to say you have signed in order for payment to issue.
You can only transfer your benefit after being in receipt of it for 4 weeks, and you can transfer it for 78 days.
I don't know if it is possible to move around to different cities.

Would you be able to clarify the difference between benefit and allowance?

Jobseeker's Benefit is based on your PRSI contributions, Jobseeker's Allowance is means tested.

    Hi Kold,
Just to add a little more to what cee_jay has already mentioned.

If you are claiming Jobseekers Benefit in Ireland, you can continue to claim this in another European Economic Area (EEA) member state for up to 13 weeks (78 days), while looking for work. You can also apply for an extension if you want to stay longer and keep looking for work. The EEA includes all the EU countries, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. Beware though -Jobseekers Allowance is not paid out if you are abroad; nor are Supplementary Welfare Allowances like rent supplement.

If you want to keep claiming Jobseekers Benefit you must supply your new address to your Irish Social Welfare office and register with the Social Welfare office in the country you are in within seven days of moving. The payment is then paid straight into your bank account so long as you stick to the usual criteria e.g. show proof that you are looking for employment. Pretty straightforward stuff!

You can get all the information you need here and more about this and your entitlements in general here. Details of the EU Regulations are available here(pdf).

I know this is an old post but just bumping on the offchance someone will answer

If I transfer my jobseekers to the UK while seeking work, can I claim any rent allowance from the Irish state to help me while I'm there? I have my signing on apt on the 19th Sept so will ask then but I'm just curious to know

    Thanks
