Engine Rattle & Shuddering

My 2003 Ford Fiesta (1.3 Engine) is making a rattling noise when in idle, coming from the driver's side. It isn't always audible with the window up, but I can definitely hear it if I roll the window down. It sounds quite "gratey" when it starts up, almost like a diesel engine sounds, and when I'm accelerating too. Also, when I press the clutch when the car is in idle, the car shudders. When the clutch isn't pressed, there's no shudder. The rpm doesn't change.

I recently had a "check engine" light come on in the car, and the mechanic said it was something to do with the catalytic convertor, and thresholds being too low. He fixed this manually and didn't replace anything. I haven't had a warning light since.

When I bought the car, there was (what I believe) to be a slight hole in the exhaust (only a couple of months back), but it's only audible when the rpm is going back down to idle after pressing the accelerator, and even at that it's not loud.

    All fluid levels are fine.

Anyone have any idea what this could be, and what checks I could do myself before bringing it to a mechanic? I wouldn't be doing any work on it myself, just checks to try to eliminate what could be wrong.
