Clocking - How to check?

Bought a car off a reliable car dealer that i and extended family have had dealings with for years. Always been very decent. Seems good deal, low mileage car, 5 years old- only 30,000miles on it. didnt have the service book for it but confirmed that it had been serviced for past two years at the garage. I accepted this as i have always found them straight and honest.

However, a few things are beginning to niggle at me and i wouldnt mind verfying the mileage, if for no other reason than for peace of mind.

Would be grateful for any ways i could verify the mileage. Would NCT have records of mileage seeing as it was nct'ed previously? Cartell chekc any good?

Probably nothing but i would like to double check anyway.

    Any suggestions welcome, thanks.

The odometer reading is always recorded as part of the NCT, so that should be written on the cert. Some newer cars store distance indirectly in the engine ECU and this can be accessed via diagnostics. After that, you can try a history check, though they're often depending on the same sources of information that you already have access to.

At 5 years old it will have gone through 2 NCTs so they should be recorded but I'm not sure if you can ring em up and ask details on specific cars....I'm pretty sure you can't.
The only way would be getting the actual NCT certificate. It's printed on that. Not sure about Cartell/Mywheels etc. Dont think do have mileage plus its studiply expensive to use those sites:rolleyes:.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,652 ✭✭✭Chimaera

No, at 5 years old, it'll have done its first NCT only. The first test is at 4 years, and it's every 2 years after that until it's over 10 years old when it becomes annual.

Are there matching tyres on it? It's possible for a 30k car to still have the original tyres, Do they match the spare?

    What car is it?

Its an 07 Mondeo. Curiousity aroused as it was a fleet car initially and the mileage, 30,000 now, would seem low based on that

Dont have the full NCT cert, only the part displayed on the windscreen. NCT will not provide details to me of mileage at date of the test

Motorcheck / cartell don't show the nct mileage. Not shared with them. I'd ring the nct to see. Your car after all, so no data protection issue.

People not buying cars with no checkable service history is the best way to check.

Motorcheck said somehting in a post a monthor two back that seemed to suggest they might be getting access to the NCT mileage records. I didnt recheck the thread after about a week but I dont think he got back on to clear up when I asked for clarification.

Not sure exactly on the Mondeo. but most newer models can be plugged into diagnostic equipment to assess mileage from a number of sources across the car.

The average clocker merely clears the odometer value and leaves the others alone. I suggest bringing it to a good independent / main ford dealer with the relevant computer equipment.

Go this route once the car is in your name...
    18. What will I do if I lose my NCT Certificate or NCT Report?

You can replace any of the above for a fee of €12.70. You must go to your local Garda station and obtain an RF134 form, which must be stamped and signed by the Gardaí. Send this completed form back, along with either your windscreen disc or NCT Certificate, whichever part you may still hold, and a bank draft or postal order payable to Applus Car Testing Service Ltd., to: The Test Certificate Administrator, NCTS, Lakedrive 3026, Citywest Business Campus, Naas Road, Dublin 24.

For a replacement NCT Report, simply write in with car registration number, make and model and owner details along with the €12.70 fee to the Test Certificate Administrator at the above address. These fees may be subject to change.

Could have been a pool car. I know one at work that spends weeks unused.

I would still investigate it thoroughly.

Google the reg, most "Hire cars" show up on google. i can't imagine a "Reputable Dealer" would clock a car back to an obviously low mileage.

I was going to make a joke about you ditching a woman to go home to google porn, but i don't think I will,

op do the seats, pedals, steering wheel and carpets look fresh,. not the best way to tell but can give an insight into how long a person has sat in the car.

If you know it was a fleet car do you know with which fleet?, if you could find this out pick up the phone and ring them. Other than that enjoy your new car.

Car was owned by car dealer, reputable Ford dealer, for 9 months. That is what i meant by fleet car. I have the second owners details, who i can now contact. I have bought 4 cars previously from this firm and found them decent and straight but i would still like to be sure.

What do you feel the need to be insulting and obnoxious? To cover up massive failures in your own life? I doubt you would have the gumption to to something like that in person with me, or anyone else for that matter, but sticky keyboard jockeys like you rarely do.

Fair enough, apologies for the incorrect term.

I'm curious as to what is odd about the car that you now think the mileage may not be genuine?

Not all fleet cars have high mileage..

In my last company we all had fleet cars.. none of us lived over 5 miles from the office, and none of us did any work mileage .. I put 11K miles on it in 5 years..The pool cars had even less mileage on them.
Lots of multi nationals give fleet cars to medium/senior office based staff as part of their compensation package.

Check with the garage who serviced it.

That means nothing - could have been a simple mistake. It's easily checked by calling the garage who stamped the book.

Ah I didn't' realize .I've Seen a honda before and the rev needle would move to about 900 with ign on before even starting the engine

I phoned the NCT regarding getting a replacement cert. They stated that the replacement cert would not have the mileage at the date the NCT was carried out, this would only be stated on the notice to the driver in the event of a failure. Stated this information was not retained by them.

I don't think that's correct. I've had a friend check out what mileage was on a car at it's previous NCT. It is retained, but I guess not handed out readily.

The previous NCT as in the current one?

The clocks could be out for other reasons than clocking though. Anythign from changing bulbs to cleaning (I do that)

yes. but if they dont move then you can take it that the clocks have not been removed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,652 ✭✭✭fasttalkerchat

You can change the mileage through the comm port so no need to remove the clocks. There will still be a second reading hidden in the ECU. A Ford garage will check it for you but they will charge you an arm and a leg for it. Better to be sure because the timing belt could be overdue a change and you wont know.
