    Hi All

My wife got a 07 Mazda 5 last july, when we she first got it I dropped it into the local garage for a full service. She has put 7k kms onto it since July but I checked the oil yesterday and the oil wasnt even hitting the dip stick

I put 1.5 litres into it and it just about marked the bottom of the dip stick. The car now has 142k kms on it but I didnt think it would be using so much oil and its not leaking.

The oil I used was castrol magnatec 10w40 if that helps.

    If it helps with what?
I think you forgot to ask any questions to your story.

Doesn't look like a question to me, rather just conclusion.

Good point.... Question is.... is this normal for that engine to use so much oil ?

It's not normal, but I'd say it is quite common.

It's the same engine as MK3 mondeo 1.8.
I had one, and at some stage it started using about 1 litre of oil per 1000km.

I'm not 100% sure AFAIR the problem here are the piston rings, which would be fairly expensive to fix.
It might be just cheaper to check oil level every week and top-up if you are not doing big mileage.

No it's not the same engine AFAIK. They didn't have as much in common as people think.

1.8 Mazda usually bulletproof - I had one for a few years.

I'm sure there are differences, but general engine chassis and head is the same AFAIK.

    The engine is worn.

    The engine is worn.

is anyway of stopping this ? one of the reasons i went for the mazda was because a lot of people say its bulletproof.

    No. Rebuild or replace it.

p.s. Any chance it's merely leaking?

For what it's worth, I also have an 07 1.8 Mazda 5, 70K kms on the clock and don't have a problem with oil consumption. Levels stay mostly consistent.

pm, I'd say it's down to ill-treatment by a previous owner more than anything else. Check for leaks all the same - top up, drive it, put cardboard on the ground underneath on a dry evening. See if there are any stains underneath in the morning.

Keep an eye on the levels over the next while, see how fast it is dropping. At less than 10k kms a year you might get away with just topping it up and driving away!

Sounds like it was very low tho. Is it blowing blueish smoke when you start it in the morning, or is there is a distinct oil-burning smell from the exhaust even once the engine has been running for a while?

When was last NCT? do you have the HC numbers for the engine? Gives an indication of the oil being burned, but I've seen cars that were burning a lot of oil under certain conditions pass the NCT no problem after being reddened out the motorway beforehand :D

edit - these "engine conditioners" that claim to fix up seals etc are mainly snake oil I'd say. Tried em on a banger I had, didn't do much. Except, that is, until the day I finally drove her to the scrapper - not a trace of blue smoke that day, would have preferred it to be billowing.

No car is bulletproof if you drive it without oil.

It ain't over for the car just yet.
Now that you have topped up yourself - keep an eye on the oil over the next months, and check on ground underneath the car.
As long as the car passes emissions test you can still drive it. There's other things you can do as well but a few euro worth of oil now and then won't kill you.
