i will be graduating recently as a quantity surveyor, mature student, i have 15months experience through a placement with a multi national PQS firm, previous to that I have professional qualifications in another field in the construction industry which i worked at for 5 years, i also spent time abroad where i worked on building sites.
i plan on emmigrating to canada quite soon, can anybody give me advice on where to go, where i should look for work, how hard it will be to find work, any help would be much appreciated.

You'll have the best chance of work in Alberta or Saskatchewan at the moment. Up north of Edmonton there is work with the oil companies in Fort McMurray

Some of the companies that are well known over here are
Suncor, Encana, Husky, Flint but there are loads of other smaller ones. Not sure about the need for QS but i'd imagine they do

    Hey OP,
You should look into QS work in Vancouver, which just got an $8 Billion contract to build coast guard and non navy ships. Or Halifax on the East coast which got a $25 Billion contract, which will also bring a serious boost to construction industry.

    Why did I come home:confused:?

Hi, you should look at contacting an agency in Canada like www.diamondglobal.ca as they specialise in recruiting foreign workers into Canada.

Hi. I think the first thing you have to know is that you nearly always start as an Estimator in Canada. So my advice is that you alter your CV to reflect experience as an Estimator and give a reference that will back this up. A lot of the Project Managers over there actually do the cost control.... Its very different. I have Estimating & QS experience of 13 years and the advice I was given (from friends who are in Canada already) was to change CV just to reflect Estimating. I have an offer and am currently making up my mind whether to go or not. But for a guy like you I would go in a shot!! I have a contact for a job with a cladding company over there if you are interested?

hi, I'm working in Alberta and have contact with construction firms such as Camdon Construction & Scott builders. They seem to be very busy and I think are looking for Estimators all the time. good luck.
