Will you be covering as many miles as ever Corkie?

May I recommend a C5/406/75 and an older Avensis

In van shaped things maybe a Partner

Van Auctions in Dublin Mal, saw one bought there recently, a new shape Caddy - was bought for 1400 Euro. Bloody cheap, I'd have had it myself for that money.

As you know you'll get better value petrol cars if that's the mileage but if it must be a diesel

    Mazda 626

Lots of what shows up seems to have 170k+ miles and be shabby looking. Is that ok?

I assume you want something somewhat respectable looking

Citroen Xantia with 3 months tax and 11 months NCT. Probably a bit of room to move on the asking price:

For 1500 euro in a car you will be way back in the years a clean avensis however the car tax is 660 euro a year, @14 miles a day by 365 is about 5000 miles the most extra a petrol car will cost of fuel for that is 350 a bit more than the difference in car tax but you would have more cars open to you

If you go back in the years try to get a low milage clean one however a small van is the ideal option if you can tax commercial caddy, berlingo partner transit-connect or an seat inca however if you go to the auctions you could get a 06-07 for that price also if you had another 12-15 hundred a lot of dealers are selling Ex post office for over 2500 there are kangoo or berlingo's

I posted this in bangernomics. For €1500 you would probably make an appreciating classic out of it!

I'd go for the likes of a 1.6 petrol focus at that mileage tbh, you'll see 30+ mpg easily enough and in the winter you'll get the heat into the car much quicker :)

I can see why you'd prefer a diesel still though.

Fails the max engine size criteria but might be got for €1500 as they are not hugely popular, fresh miles wise.

Couple of Toledos here right on budget and right on your doorstep ( more or less )
Reason I suggest a toledo is you are familiar with VAG cars and they are surprisingly comfortable.
