hi all, I'd my heart set on a 05 onwards audi a4/a6 1.9/2.0 diesel until i found out about the problems with engines letting go/timing chains etc.
is there anyway of way catching this problem when i go looking at cars or is it a lottery? i have about 6k to play with maybe a bit more for the right car. i'd only be looking at standard, unmodified black cars.
failing this I'd probably go with a passat diesel, anything to watch out for here? i need something reliable, decent to drive and good on diesel but something that looks good, dont really fancy a mondeo, avensis, skoda, korean etc.
    any help appreciated :pac:

You realise a Passat has the same engines as an A4?

None of those engines mentioned have timing chains, they all have timing belts. Oil pumps and injectors are the most common problem on the 2.0 TDi of that era but the injectors seem to be acknowledged and replaced by Audi/VW now afaik. VAG gearboxes can also be a weak point on these cars.

Personally I'd go for the 1.9 TDi and look at getting it remapped, it's an old unit but generally alot less troublesome.

There was a thread on pretty much this exact subject a few weeks back:

A good suggestion for anyone but this Mr Grey man OP here:

That was my thread, lil update, so far everything is peachy. The car is driving beautifully still, i adore it tbh. Got george here to have a quick look at it and he listened and no sign of any trouble yet anyway. 111k miles on it at the moment. So fingers crossed! :) if there wasn't such a bad reputation about this engine, id recommend it, but beware I suppose!

Hi all, i have a different problem which I hope someone can help with as I cannot afford to go to a Audi dealer and I need to get the car NCT'D. The problems I am having is t do with the drivers side window, it wont move but the passengers side is fine and works from the switch on the drivers side.also the mirrors and the the little LED/light on the electric window button/switch is not illumnated.

    What i have tried:

    Checked fuse- No problem
Removed door trim- replaced with a new switch but no joy
Checked the wiring from the door to the car- all seems intact

Checked the footwell in the passengers side as some say this maybe wet and damaged the "convenience control unit" feels very dry and I havent bothered taking it out at this stage as its alot of work

Audi dealer seems to think it is the door control unit, can someone point out what part he is talking about as it seems to have 3 pieces and is it replaceble on its own?

Would appreciate any help as i have a car with the door trim off and wondering waht to do next? thanks
