It's more common than you think. Couple years ago an Air Canada FO had to be taken out of the cockpit transatlantic for some mental issues. A cabin crew member had a CPL and helped the Captain land in Heathrow.

There's a well known incident that happened with Ryanair in Italy. The Captain suffered a bereavement in the previous week and the FO had to take over and cancel the landing.

This is very interesting though: An Asiana 747 pilot that took out life assurance just a month before he crashed and died. Speculation about a possible intended ditching by him.

Was the skipper locked out and did he go mad cause he could not get back in and the passengers jumped the skipper then? Mabey it was the F.O who was the crazy one?
Why would he not let the skipper back into the flight deck?
If I was him I would be roaring and shouting at my FO to let me back in aswell I should think.

EgyptAir Flight 990 is an interesting case of a pilot going crazy.

The F/O noted that the Capt was behaving erratically so when he left to go to the toilet the F/O apparently decided to keep him out of the cockpit.

Was that not the incident where they actually diverted to Shannon rather than land at Heathrow ?

Regarding the Air Canada Shannon incident was a report ever published by the IAA / AAIU on it ?

I think the Air Canada pilot ended up having a brain tumor or something if I am thinking of the same incident.

At least the copilot was able to land the plane. :p

True :) Evidently there was an off duty pilot on board who went up to the flight deck to assist with the landing after the captain had been incapacitated.

Don't see why the FO would have any problem landing by himself.

Alternativly if the plane was switched to autopilot it could have landed itself. :p

I don't like the fact that they called this a "panic attack" since it's clearly not what a panic attack is.

Pretty scathing on the poor guy. Especially where it says "did knowingly interfere....etc". Seems a little early to be condemning the guy who most likely was not in his right mind and did not know what he was doing. Presumably he will be properly examined by a psychiatrist to diagnose exactly what happened to him. If it does turn out to be panic attack/breakdown or other mental "malfunction"(for want of a better word) I hope he gets treated with compassion.
