Change Bike size - Advice

    Hi all,

I'm am just wondering if anyone had some advice re the dilemma I have.

I bought a Canyon ultimate cf last year (so now about 8 months old) and its in great nick and is a lovely bike and all that. I bought a size 52 and it is becoming more apparent that one size down (the 50) would be a better fit. I am pretty much at the minimum saddle height for the 52 for example.

So my choices in this are:
    • Buy a size 50 frame and rebuild the bike hoping to sell the frame. (having just
taken out cycling Ireland membership, a discount on the frame may be possible)
    • Buy a new complete in the hopes that it is easier to shift a full bike. (I would be replacing it with the ultegra version which in the size 50 comes with 165cm cranks and 38cm handle bars which I don't want and am unsure if they can be changed at canyon easily)

Anyway, just wondering if anyone had any advice they could impart. Is there a market out there for frames? What are the chances of someone needing the exact swap?

What problems is your current set-up causing? Is it simply the saddle height (which you seem to have sorted) or is it the reach of the handlebars also? You could consider a shorter stem to get a better fit

With the saddle height as low as I have it, it is nearly parallel to the top of the stem. Since the canyon has a fairly tall headtube I feel like I'm not getting the most out the position for a road bike. I don't have any problems with flexibility and reckon that with a greater drop to the bars I could get a flatter back/more efficient position (if not quite a Brad Wiggan's position). There are, of course, the aesthetic concerns to the low saddle!

The reach is actually fine on the current bike. I will probably have to go with a longer stem on the smaller frame. As it is I have been riding the bike fine and have a couple of thousand km on it. It's just one of those things that has been niggling at me

Are there any spacers under the stem that can be moved above, and if the stem is inverted will it give you an even lower bar position?

If flipping the stem as Beasty suggests doesn't take it down enough for you, its possible to order a 17 degree stem from Canyon to get an even lower position. I recently bought a stem off another Boardsie, Moggs1972, who had a spare after doing that. He did say that it took them a while to supply though.
In any event, I have a 50 CF 8 and if you are in Dublin in the next while, you would be welcome to try it for size.

Already moved the stem down, there is some improvement but still feel like the position is a little upright. I didn't try flipping the stem, will give it a go this evening. I'd say that unless it is one of just crazy adjustable ones, the starting point on the fork is just too high.

Thanks. I stuck them a message inquiring about the frame sponsorship discount dealy so when they get back to me I will follow up for the stem. Don't think I will be in Dublin any time soon but appreciate the offer.

Forgot to add that my 50 came with 170 cranks and 40 bars as standard. Also as you probably already know standard stems won't fit a Canyon which is a bit of a pain.

Is yours the ultegra? I was under the impression that it came with with the smaller size cranks and handlebars as per their geometry spec. That was part of the reason I went for the 52!

The non standard stem is another issue which makes me reluctant to change anything. I suppose sourcing a frame in the LBS and reselling would be another alternative. I do genuinely like the canyon frame though!

I have Ultegra triple (at my age I need a granny gear:D) and I made no changes to the spec when ordering.

If you are set on changing size, Canyon also sell frames and maybe you could get your discount off that.
