I'm finished school this year (:D :D) and I've never had a proper job before beyond au pairing. I'm wondering, what sort of places hire people like me or do they even exist anymore? I'm not even that pushed on being paid I'd just like something to do for the summer and to get experience. Is it better to send CVs or to ring them up first? :)

    Hi Everyone,

I was just reading some of the threads posted about some of you who have got internships, which I am glad to hear about. I have been unemployed for almost a year now since finishing college and have been to FAS on numerous occasions and have been constantly applying for internships in my field.

I was told initially that you had to be in receipt of a social welfare payment for at least 3 months by my local FAS office and likewise my SW office, then I was told that this was not the case, that you could be in receipt of any sw payment for any amount of time to apply. Like I said, I have been applying and I am really desperate to get some experience in my field, which is science. Also I was told that the grade in the degree was not important for getting an internship. I really don't know what to believe.

I do not know or know of anyone or even know friends who know friends cousins sister-in-laws etc who have got one, even though they have the qualifications and all say the same things about FAS and how unhelpful they have been and haven't got their internships. I do not know any of you guys, and I find it hard to believe honestly. I have a suspicion that this internship scheme is just set up so that one can tell SW what they are applying for and make it look as though they are seeking work to justify their benefits.

I have been trying and getting no replies from major pharmaceutical companies, which I think looks bad on them not replying, even to say no to the applicants. On the other hand, I have been writing and even calling into pharmaceutical companies asking for experience independent of FAS/jobbridge and the vast majority have said that they had someone already on the jobbridge internship scheme. The mind just boggles. Again, I have been keeping up to date with jobbridge's website and not seeing these internships advertised. What is going on here?

I understand that in Ireland, it is not what you know it's who you know but I've done the whole networking thing and made contact with people and made the right contacts and asked all of the right questions. All I am getting is NO or we'll see, or we'll keep your CV on file(the bin). Am I just not meant to work and put to the test what I studied in college?

Do these big companies not want to take anyone on and want every graduate in Ireland to emigrate so that they can be someone else's problem? The same goes for FAS and Social Welfare! In order to get a job aborad, we need money for our flights and how do we get money with no employment, not to mention experience to get work abroad?? Emigration really is not the right answer.

If anyone has had or is having a similar experience, I would like to hear about it. And for those who I said, I found it hard to believe, do you blame me?
