Figured it'd be a good idea to have a thread for this. I imagine alot of us are waiting for updates for our phones & tablets etc.

Personally I have an Xperia Ray and Galaxy tab 7.7 and am getting a bit impatient! Please hurry up Sony and Samsung :(

I'd rather Sony didn't hurry up actually, because in their haste to get it out they have opted to use the older linux kernel :(

True but why mess with something that works well?? Also I heard implementing a new kernel would ad significantly to the development time

got ics the other day for my galaxy s2. personally I can't see what all the fuss was about.

Got ICS update on my Archos 101 G9 tablet. Since updating, runs much smoother and really improves the tablet. Very happy with Archos. :D

Unfortunately, I'm still waiting for an update on my Nexus S. So much for being the first to get updates.

That's because Samsung fecked it up as usual. They went with the gingerbread theme (green) instead of ICS (blue)

Using the Samsung Touchwiz shíte will stop you getting the full effect. You'll need a custom ROM to see it in all it's glory. I think it's lovely, some great updates, copy and paste, notifications, app drawer, calendar, gmail and recent apps all had significant improvements.

I don't think anyone getting ICS from Samsung or HTC will really appreciate it - they'll both add so much of their own crap it'll be unrecognisable.

I have ICS on my Sensation on a custom ROM and it's lean, fast and has lots of bells and whistles of its own. I also have it, officially, on my Transformer and Asus have left it pretty much alone. As a result it's very impressive.

i have to say im now regretting changing from an iphone to an android.

the updates are so bloody slow, and the emails do my nut in.

in all honesty, Android is a cheaper, shoddier version of the Apple iphone.

ICS was the selling point for me when i got a htc sensation late last year. And im still waiting.Terrible service :(

Eh, the blame lies at HTC, not Android. HTC haven't released it because they want to mess with it, add their own layer of crap on top of it.

You could always get it yourself the custom ROM route. Samsung aren't releasing ICS at all for the Galaxy S but I've been running it for ages

    Oh dear...

How was ICS a selling point for the Sensation? It didn't have it and, when it does arrive, it'll be HTC's bastardised version of it.

You should probably return to the neat and tidy safe world of Apple.

Why can't emails on android resize the images like they did on an iphone, or is that another HTC thing?

And rooting, what is it exactly?

What email client? There are many, check the market for a better one. Unlike Apple there are other options. You can tweak Android to the way you like it, that's the idea. I'm one of those who can't stand the crap Samsung and HTC layer on top of Android. I prefer a more vanilla Android with my own set of preferred apps.
And rooting, what is it exactly?

It's like jailbreaking on Apple. It unlocks the root Android folders giving you higher privileges and thereby more options, like adblock and backup.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rooting_(Android_OS)
(You can always unroot a phone, reverse the process)

Just because you don't know how to use an OS, doesn't mean it's broken! :D

Ah you gave me a good laugh after coming into work this morning, in all honesty I think you probably should have stuck with the iPhone too.

I mean Android is an operating system (Software) and the "Apple iPhone" is a device (Hardware). Calling Android a "cheaper, shoddier version of the Apple iphone" doesn't exactly make any sense, at all.

Ok, I'm not a computer programmer, so apologise to the other "android itk's" on my grammer :-)

All I want mainly from this phone is for the emails to resize images so i can view the email correctly. I'm using the standard email account from HTC and the gmail app from market, but the gmail app is terrible. The images are huge when viewing an email that comes with a picture, I have to constantly scroll up and down, left and right. It just doesn't fit the screen

And rooting, as stated above I'm no computer programmer so i have no idea how to do that. If I'm honest, I still don't really understand it either

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,272 ✭✭✭✭Atomic Pineapple

You don't need to be a computer programmer to know the difference between a piece of software and a physical device, the Internet is a free open source of information, research has never been so easy, if I'm looking to buy a new phone I research it whether it be iOS,Android or WP7, same goes for a TV or a car or pretty much anything I'm going to spend a substantial amount of money on.

What is the best way to back up data before upgrading? I am on Cyangenmod 7.1 (a nightly) and am tempted to move to 9 (ICS) but I want to back up all my apps data (game saves etc!). I have Titanium Backup Pro so I guess I should use that but wanted to know if anyone has tried already? Any gotchas etc?

Like I said before, try another email client from the market. What you're asking is pretty daft, that the email client messes with the email by showing you thumbnails of the images reduced to a smaller size. Most email clients will show them full size as that's the way they were intended/sent.

Have had it on my Desire for a few weeks now, various builds of Sandvolds ICS.
The latest one is very stable, works well and runs fast on the Desire.

Titanium does a pretty good job of backing up apps data. It's not 100% perfect, some apps don't reinstall sometimes, but it's good.

not sure what there is to screenshot really. im so very unimpressed. the screen seems crisper or something but beyond that theres no real massive difference that i see. it seems a little more sluggish too, and ive rebooted 3 times just in case. anything in particular?

Just the look of it. As you know I'm no fan os Sense so I'm curious how much damage HTC have done to ICS.

As to the sluggishness, a factory reset should clear that if you don't mind the hassle of backing up and restoring everything.

not sure how much use any of these are but here you go... let me know if you want shots of any other parts.

it still has the annoying thing with sms too. when you have delivery reports on and you send a msg you get a notification when the msg is received by the other person but you cant stop thing coming up like a normal sms.

The only true bit of ICS there is the new Gmail app, everything else ruined by HTC Sense, even the lockscreen
These are the changes you're supposed to see:

Bloody HTC and there Sense overlay! Must start petitioning Google to lock down Android. No more messing about with different user experiences from different manufacturer, no more manufacturer added bugs, no more waiting for new releases to be modified,no more bloat-ware or operater branding, faster, slicker, smoother, easier to develop for meaning more devs, better apps.

Surely Android is big enough now to make that move, it doesn't need to be freely modifiable to attract handsets?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,080 ✭✭✭✭Random

its a bit annoying that i dont get all the promised changes i suppose.

the phone also seems to be forcing my contacts to sync or something, im getting facebook photos and stuff in whatsapp that i wouldnt get before (because i opted not to sync them together!)

++ edit - turns out the update just synced facebook again by default but im able to turn it off. there is some messing about with google+ and syncing too though which is annoying. this happens in gmail on the pc too though so not sure theres anyway around that

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,178 ✭✭✭killbillvol2

Thanks for the screenshots. HTC really are a shower of bastards - that's far more Sense than ICS. They've basically changed the font from Gingerbread and that's about it.

Yeah but that's the beauty about android. If you want the locked in approach just get an i phonings.

Just got it on my sensation.... What a massive disappointment. I'm so angry right now, all these improvements are nowhere to be seen basically. It's ugly and most importantly laggy as ****. I'm goin to look into rooting now, can anyone recommend a really easy to use guide?? I'm awful at stuff like that so it would have to basically spoon fed instructions!

Rooting won't help you, you need to flash a custom ROM without HTC Sense.

I disagree, your getting confused about what I'm saying, I'm not looking for Apple type locked down software, I'm looking for consistency throughout the Android range that offers end users a better consistent experience, at the minute when you buy an Android your likely to be getting a bloated version thats been destroyed by a manufacturer both in terms of UI and performance.

I disagree. Much depends on the manufacturer. I have a SE Xperia ray and the UI and performance are great, indeed many of the 'bits' SE added are actually very useful, and don't hinder performance at all. From the soundbites here, HTC seem to be making a bit of a hash of things with their sense UI, but another thing we have to remember is that with any 'first version' of an O.S., generally speaking your likely to get a bug or two that affects performance, regardless of the manufacturer's overlay...

I'm thinking more from the perspective as a developer to be honest, there are lots of small API's that get broken between manufacturers, for example its not possible to register for the CALL intent on some HTC's, on Some Samsungs the in volume controls don't adhere to their API's, on some Motorola's you can't use the microphone at all to record. A standardised Android would solve all these issues and attract more development and better apps. Even if Google had a strict set of tests each version of modified Android had to pass it would be a start.

Also as a consumer I'd much prefer to not have Sense, TouchWiz or Timescape bloating Android, perhaps give consumers a choice might be good idea?
