BMW E60 Fault

    Hi all,

Have a "restraint systems faulty" message on my 2005 E60. Airbag and seatbelt warning lights on as a result.

I have read up that this is usually caused by a faulty passenger occupancy sensor mat. However that seems to be working as expected - fasten seatbelt message appears when bum in seat - disappears when bum leaves seat or seatbelt fastened.

Any ideas what other part could cause this? Is there a cheap way of getting a diagnosis? Would a garage be able to pin down the exact part at fault so I can fix myself?

    Thanks in advance!

It might be a simple code reset. Have you changed battery recently?

Changes are you might have knocked the cable temporarily underneath the seat. This fires a warning to the ECU and stays untill reset.

Any decent garage can reset that. Or you could try a code reset yourself

    INPA or DIS.

    No haven't changed the battery.

Is it hard to do the reset DIY style? What do I need to buy?

Most of the cheapest code readers won't be detailed enough for resetting restraint faults on an E60.

It can sometimes only take a momentary fault to trigger the warning so proper diagnostics of the fault and of whatever component caused it is needed.

Manual fault code resetting isn't really possible on your car.

@Nissan Doctor: if it was caused by a temporary fault is it possible that it will clear itself after a certain number of ignition starts? say 30 or 60?

On such electronically complicated cars like yours everything is computer based, there are almost no manual or automatic resets. So it would need a suitable diagnostic computer to read/reset.
