Yup, gardai called to the door this evening and my cars been burnt out (regular's to this forum might notice i had a post up about it being broken into a few weeks back, lovely neighbourhood), car wasn't worth much but what's sickening is that i'd just paid the road tax! Any way i can claim it back? Also, the car was worth very little but if i claim from the insurance will it affect my no-claims bonus or is that just for accident's?
    Cheers

How many months motor tax was left on it? 3 months is the minimum that can be claimed iirc. Had you put a full year on it?

You have to check in your insurance policy.
Some insurers don't affect NCB by fire claims, while some do.

About tax return I assume you would have to scrap the car first.
If there was more than 3 months left of tax from the day of scraping, you should be able to receive your tax back, but knowing how motor tax offices work and how useless they are, this might be very tricky bit.

I only had three months tax on it so i probably won't get it back, if i can i might tho coz i'm skint! It's more that i had just taxed it a few hours earlier is what's bugging me. I'm hoping it won't affect my no claims more than anything, the car was old so it might not even be worth claiming. I'll find out in the morning but if that's the case Grrr!

Maybe I'm wrong, but I recall something that you can reclaim tax back, if car was not driven at all since you last paid tax.

just checked it now and it looks like the guys above were right, i can't claim for tax because it's under three months, which seems a bit unfair towards the skint amongst us, myself included. I checked my policy tho and it looks like my no claims is covered phew!

why does it have to be more then 3 months to get a refund and the price of it? and also they dont be long taking the money for arrears! what a utter complete scam and they should refund even if it is 1 or 2 months tax left.

I completely agree, on top of having my car destroyed i'm another 80 quid out of pocket. But no wait, it's all well money well spent by our beloved darling government, there's some unfortunate bondholder out there who can now afford another layer of car wax on his shiny new Bentley as a result. ah sure how could i deny it to the poor misfortunes..... here take the shirt off my back to polish it with why don't ya....

Did you use your car between you taxed it and moment it was burnt?

I'm guessing he taxed it for March, April and May so I'd say the answer is yes. Otherwise, if it was taxed for 3 months from April, there'd be no problem claimign the tax.

How many Irish people do you know who pay the tax and get the disc before their previous tax was up though? :)

Yes but given what we have to pay for motor tax here (eg: my 2L Passat is €185 a quarter), coupled with the fact that (most?) people don't get paid till the end of the month, is it any wonder it's a last minute rush? :o (ditto the Household Tax I'm betting incidentally)

There are over thirty words in the Irish language which are equivalent to the Spanish mañana. But somehow none of them conveys the same sense of urgency - Patrick Kavanagh.;)

And with the money they charge here I'm not in that much of a hurry!
