How much is my car worth?

    Hey guys,

Im thinkin about trading my car or selling it privately at the start of the summer.
It is a vw polo 01. It has 52,000 miles. It is in IMMACULATE condition. Not one scratch on it. The interior is excellent. Timing belt and water pump done. Serviced every 6,000 miles from new with receipts to back up.
I love it to pieces but want to move up through the years.
How much do you thinks it worth? If its not much would I be better off holding onto it for a few more years?
I would like a golf because i want a little more power, but is there much differnce between a 1 litre and a 1.4 reaslistically?

Thanks for your replies in advance.

I wouldn't be that familiar with Polo's but thats fairly small mileage for an 11 year old car, and also the fact that its 'immaculate' would probably make it around €3,000. Not 100% though, look at similar cars on Carzone or Donedeal to see what others are charging for them

    3k?

I'd say roughly half that, unfortunately regardless of milage or condition it's a 01 car. I'd say you could advertise for between 1700 and 2000 but would probably have to settle for a bit less because of similar cars on offer. Just my 2 cents

There's no way you'll get €3000 for a 10 year old Polo regardless of mileage, €2000 and you'd be doing well at that.

    11 year old. :)

€3,000 would make it the 3rd most expensive Polo on Carzone. A lot of people wouldnt make it far enough down the list to even see it.

Thats what I was thinking lads, thanks for that!
I reckon if I stick it up for 2200 and first one to offer anything over 1500 will get it!
Do you think its worth trading into a garage? Will they give me next to nothing for it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,968 ✭✭✭blindside88

It really depends what your trading it against, personally I'd sell it privately as you can negotiate a better deal for yourself on the new car with a garage or private seller if your bringing cash to the table

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Privately about 1300 or so. Buy straight and get a discount off what you're buying. A 1.4 golf won't be a whole load faster

Garage will give y wy less than you'll get privately. Which is fair enough.

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Hold onto it. You know the car, you know it is good and you will get very little for it if you try to sell it. To trade it up to a 1.4 Golf a few years younger would cost you a thousand or two. The Golf would almost certainly be in worse condition than your own car. The 1.4 engine is one of the worst around. Not really a car to aim for in life, to sum it up :)

Keep your car, put your savings away and buy a much nicer car in a few years time :D

That's a great bit of advice unkel, thank you very much for that. And thanks for the other advice too lads much appreciated. Your dead right about waiting and buying something really nice in the future, I love my car but I am just gettin frustrated with the fact its not really suitable for the motorway so it takes me AGES to drive anywhere as I steer clear and take all the back routes haha.

sorry to hijack but I think its better than to start another related thread??

Just wondering how much I could expect to get for my car..
    Silver BMW 318i (2.0 Petrol)
    2006
    98,000 Km
Full service history and new tyres fitted in January
    1 previous owner.
Cream leather interior and the alloys arent the usual boring standard ones (prob doesnt make a difference though)
    Its in great condition.

I'd say privately about €7500 but I could be well off and I'd be interested in hearing what folks more in the know ballpark it as :)

I may as well jump in, this is a stick up! I mean a hijack,
how much is my car worth? :D
98 fiesta, 1.25 serviced every 10k miles or slightly sooner, run all the time, lowish miles for the age about 116k miles, timing belt which I got done. Clean enough, when I clean it up, but I've seen cleaner examples.

I have no intention of selling, plan to drive it on and on, and on :)

Fingers crossed I haven't jinxed myself, but its a good car, except the boot, if I could get a bigger boot, shame they never had the sedan versions like the polo/ibiza.

OP personally Id hold onto that car, you'd never get the value back on a well kept car.

    eh?
But BX says, reckons its worth 750,
Also it has sentimental value, hence me saying its worth more to me,
you could offer me 1000 and i wouldnt take it :D to me the sentimental value alone is worth at least 750 probably more

    Its Irish.
NCT is due next month actually but I intend on getting it done before selling.
I bought it in Oct 09

Anything petrol in today's market is going to have to be going cheap to shift it. Diesel cars are where the high prices are at the moment.

BTW you can NCT a 2006 car 3 months before it's due date.

As a general rule of thumb atm I find that the average car in good nick is priced = the year plus or minus 500 quid (ish)

    So 01 Polo = €1000 + €500

    06 BMW = €6000 + €500

    My own 02 Megane €2000 - €500

So say a 05 Astra with average miles valid NCT good condition anything from €4500 - €5500

Of course that doesn't mean they are worth this money but seems to be roughly how things are being priced right now

    Here's mine

    Photo%2520May%252009%252C%25204%252009%252035%2520p.m..jpg

    Thinking €1200ish

70k miles 1.4 aircon cd alloys trip computer nct 01.14 just serviced

By going with your theory 05 petrol Renault Megane saloon should similarly to 05 BMW 520D. It just doesn't work that way - there are way more variables than cars age.

    I did say generally...

Have a look at Done deal, I think you'll find most Joe normal cars will fall into this bracket. Golf, megane, focus, mondeo, corolla etc.

Just something I noticed recently, I'm not going to try and patent a formula or anything jeez..

Going by your "formula" the only thing that impacts cars price is it's age. There are so many other things that will impact the price of the car - Make, Model, tax, NCT, condition, mileage, extras, whether it's petrol or diesel and many more.

Also - what about cars that are older than 2000? Should the owners of those cars pay me to take them off their hands? :pac:

sounds like a great polo. Honestly i would hold onto it. A VW looks good any age. Why dont you spend say 200 euro getting it professionaly valeted and you'l want to keep it then.

The Golf is a great car, i have an 03 1.4petrol, but moving up from the polo you'l have to pay about 200 euro extra a year for tax and mine now costs E93euro to fill up. The polo id say is very cheap to run.
