A friend of mine has asked me to proof read her dissertation and has emailed it to me as .docx

    What is this?

It won't let me open it says doesn't have a program to open this type of file?

    Any help really appreciated

    :)

EDIT: Instructions like you were talking to a 5 year old please :-)

If you have Microsoft Office installed download THIS, otherwise download LibreOffice a legally free alternative to Office :) . (If you have the office compatibility pack and office installed/and still a problem choose Word when asked for a program to open with)

    Thank you very much..

Should I do something with it before I save it to email it back to her?

I will just be checking spelling etc..

Sorry to be such a bimbo :o

I got it open using that first linky you posted..

    Apologies for the double post:

I think she has done it in Powerpoint on her laptop?

    Does that sound right?

She has spent hours typing 90 pages all laid out and aligned correctly.

She emails it to me, I can't open it, then I use the fantastic advice on here and can open it.

It's a bit all over the place.

I'm supposed to correct her grammar and spelling, there are a lot of changes to be made.

    Q. Am I just wasting my time doing it on my laptop?

    Q. Would I be better getting her to come to me with her laptop and amend the original?

Sorry for all the questions, she just asked me about an hour ago and it's due to her college Friday morning.

    Thanks again...

I think you need to go to her.

Off the top of my head she has probably provided links to graphs, images, etc. which are on her laptop but which she did not transfer to you and she may have used fonts that are not "embedded" in the doc and have now been substituted on your laptop.

A bit of a mess really ... but not your fault.

Thank you so much for your fast answer.

Thats what I was thinking, there is so much to change and I don't even know the details of her subject so I'd be making up stuff :p

I'll tell her she better get herself over to mine asap.

Thanks to all of you who answered :)

What has she used to create it? Also reccomend she uses the PDF format in future, as its much better at layout retaining
