I was down in Galway for a couple of days over the weekend, and noticed that Colm Quinn BMW have put up lots of advertising signs on the Athlone bypass, stuck into the grass between the carriageway and the crash barriers. Quite apart from being completely illegal they're actually very distracting as they have one or two words per sign stretching into a sentence spread over several hundred metres. I've often seen back street dealers pulling stunts like this, but i'm surprised that a main BMW dealer would sink to that level.

Yep, spotted them over the weekend as well, just outside Athlone, on the way into Athlone.
Also, he has a truck in a private field (off the motorway but nearer the Galway side) with a fairly big add. I assume this is legal.

And neither of the sets of advertising made me want to check out a BMW although we are talking about the advertising.

Did he not lose the BMW franchise a while back? Saw his Mini signage on the M6 last week.

Leaflet drops aren't illegal and dangerous, CQ's signs are.

Signs are not dangerous, nosey muppets who take their eyes off a high speed road and take too long to read the signs are.

Theres a reason advertising is not allowed on motorways.

O yeah I know, the OP found a sign with just one word to be very distracting, any more words than that could have been a recipie for carnage.

The Gardai don't give a feck about signage on the Motorway.

I saw guys putting up signs on the M18 supporting some muck savage Gort GAA team. The sign was sponsored by the local councillor. I called the Gardai so say

    (1) They are parked on the H/S erecting a sign in the nearby grass(Two big signs)
    (2) The sign is bright luminous green
    (3) Illegal

"So ummmm what seems to be the problem"
    "It's illegal, distracting and dangerous"
    "I don't see the problem"
    *Click

4 weeks ago I think and the signs are still there. If I stopped to remove them myself I would be done for

    (1) Stopping on a Motorway
    (2) Criminal Damage

What can you do when the "law" doesn't seem to care?

I've seen them too and it's not just confined to the motorway. He has trucks parked in fields everywhere! I even saw one out near Headford last Sunday. I suppose he's taking advantage of the fact that there's no other BMW dealer in Galway now.

I had a dealing with him a few years ago, just when he went out on his own. I was left soured by the experience and I personally wouldn't darken his door again.
