I think they are 17s. Had the same car as pictured a few years ago.

Look like 18s to me, although this thread can only be considered guesswork:)

I'd be more on the side of 18" myself.

Looks like A8 12 spoke wheels, these are 18" (there's bigger ones as well but clearly not on this car :D)

I had reps of those in 17".

The linked picture looks like 18s though, going by tyre profile.

It's impossible to tell from the picture as the profile difference between 17's and 18's would only be 10 - 15mm you have some eagle eye if you can spot that on pic taken from a few feet away at an angle..

The are a good looking wheel but have been totally played out thanks to reps - i used to have a set years ago but dumped them just in time :pac: because i am cool :P

The originals were 18" but there are lots of replicas out there which are 17"s.

Anyway you'd essentially get the same fit on your car because the wheel arch will still be the same distance from the tyre anyway unless you alter the suspension.

Originals were 19's,18's on an A8 (sorry RS8 :) ) would look tiny.

'preciated. However, the surface area of a disc of 18" diameter is 12% greater than a disc of diameter 17%. Which is an appreciable amount - perhaps enough to be able to plump for one more likely than the other.

The received wisdom (given I'm not looking for anything radical in the go faster dept) is to do the wheels first then see how it looks (and I thought this looked okay).

A cheap-as-chips coilover (and I'm only doing cheap as whatever the dept) has been flagged as a bad idea. Indeed, I gave it a bit of welly over the Wicklow mountains the other day and it felt like a bit of a bus so will probably steer clear of lowering it on the cheap.

Never even contemplated there could be different size reps :)

I've always found it hard to understand what obsesses people to buy reps fakes?

Are they not significantly cheaper? In a world obsessesed by appearances uber virtually alles, cheap reps make perfect sense

To put it simply, the actual MV3 bmw alloys for my car would be anything from 1500-2000 (basically up to 500/wheel if not more) from BMW, reps are something like €120/wheel. Now, to be fair, the car was bought with the reps already on it, but I'm more than happy to keep using them because the actual BMW wheels are known for cracking - so I could spend 2 grand on wheels that will crack, or I can spend 500 on wheels that will crack and actually afford a replacement if it does happen. It just doesn't make sense to buy the real ones.

Of course you didn't replace them. It would have been a right waste of money! I just wonder why people buy fakes new in the first place? I suppose antiskeptic has kinda answered that :D

You don't like the alloys that are currently on a car / are replacing them anyway, why go spend a bomb when reps are a fraction of the cost :) I'd actually think anyone running real wheels of brands like BBS on irish roads is a nutter.

If I really hated the alloys that were on the car, perhaps I would not have bought the car. More likely is that I would just live with them. I suppose I am the kind of person who would buy a 540 warts and all instead of a perfect condition boob job M-tec spoilered 523 :)

I've BBS wheels, no issues here. :)

I ran BBS wheels for years and i would be of the opposite opinion,if you are going to have 18's on your daily then you are far better off with a good brand like BBS,O/Z,Ronal etc god knows i hit a few pot holes over the years (by accident of course) that would have broken many a wheel but the BBS stayed round and true.

You can liken this to the case of a flat-chested Angeline Jolie. One for whom a boob-job is only rectifying an aberration of nature.

It's only a 1.8T I know .. but the wheels are really pipe n' slippers material. They have to go..

    :)

Never thought of this. The lower profile tyre isn't going to stand betwixt pothole and rim to the same degree as the current tractor tyres I'm gathering..

Although most of my motoring is on fine roads - can't remember the last time I hit a pothole so perhaps cheapo wheels won't be as much of a problim.

Only a 1.8T ? Fine engine right there,is it quattro? You should consider a re-map.

If that logic works for you then go for it :D

your car is 5x112 PCD (stud pattern) which basically means you are spoilt for choice when it comes to relatively cheap OEM wheel upgrades, some food for thought....

It pulls enough to be able to contemplate overtaking stuff but it's not exactly a rip-rorter.

(bear in mind that in addition to stepping out of a 21-and-a-half bhp Ford Escort, I've also stepped off a 150 odd bhp Yamaha 1000. Heck, I found even a mates Porsche Carrera utterly underwhelming in the accelaration stakes).

    ,is it quattro?

    Nope.
    You should consider a re-map.

Is that cheap ? :). Does it affect the mpg much. The mpg (at 37 or so) is a bit marginal given my 300 miles per week. The 1.8 was a bit of a non-pragmatic treat awarded in exhange for giving up the bike

Tipped down to Wekford this afternoon and picked up a set of 18" Nuvolari reps for 250 quid. In very good condition bar for one with some mid range kerbing to the outermost circumference. Two of the tyres are v. good and two scrap.

Thanks for the tips along the way (even if I ignored the soft & heavy rep advice)
