I have an old HP laptop and on/off button is broken. It has a quick start button for "Quick play" which starts it up but does not load Windows, therefore when you click out of Windows, it hangs.
I put in a DVD of Linux 12 and that interupted Quick play, and I could run it under Linux.
What I want to know is could I get some sort of a Bat. file, put it on a CD and boot Windows,(on drive C) from that.
It's not worth trying to get the button fixed, but I need the old laptop for a couple of weeks.
I have a new Win 7 one but it's not yet compatable with the Rugby Club website which I run,
    Thanks

Have you tried disassembing the laptops power board? Maybe a simple issue. I don't know if there is a way to get it to auto load Windows, maybe look in the bios for such a setting. You could maybe make a bootable dos CD, and make a bat file to execute "win" on the C: drive which should boot Windows, although this may only work for Windows 9x (I think 2000 and up need a bootloader used)

Nothing to do with Windows 7.

Is your web browser not loading the website? Is it IE9? Try the compatibility modus. Or another web browser.

It could well be the CMS is only compatible with IE6, nothing you can really do here, except tell the website admins to upgrade or fix the code. I have seen sites that still require IE6 :O ,

Good and proper. I maintain a site which displays in ie6 a bit a*seways (although still perfectly useable). I just threw a message on to inform the user to upgrade their browser. I actually know of someone who got a site developed professionally there recently, doesn't work on either ie6 or 7 properly  (menu issues).
It does seem devs arn't bothered anymore, I do agree up to a point, although many offices still use ie6 as standard for legacy applications, so you do need to factor this into account.

re website, The designers of web site aware of problem and will get around to fixing it sometime, ( We got it for nothing and is maintained for free so can't push it).
I want to use the old laptop to also stream media around the house so would love to get it working. As I said it does everything I want under Linux Mint 12, but running from a DVD means not being able to save anything.
I just need so file to interupt "Quick Play" and redirect everything to drive C.
(PS I had a quick look at the on/off connections but no good).
I should never have gone from aDesktop PC, (LOL)
    Thanks

Whats the model # of the laptop? Look on ebay for a power board, not that hard to replace (just remove tthe screws at base, keyboard, unplug old, replug new. Tell me model # and I'll advise). I don't think theres a way to use a command prompt to use newer Windows versions, as they need a boot loader to get going (unlike 9x which used dos).

    Cracked it.
I found the recovery disks, (amazing I know), annd I put disk one in the drive. I turned it on by touching the "Quick Play" button. The recovery disk kicked in and threw up the following menu in Dos.

    Press "R" for standard recovery
Press"F" to format hard disk and reinstall factory settings.
Press "Q" to quit this menu.

When I pressed "Q" it booted normally. Happy days, many thanks for all the advice, I have learned a bit from you all.
    Thanks

Just a last word on the website issue,I tried IE9, Win & will not let me go further back . I tried compatability mode. I tried Firefox, (my default) opera, Safari and Chrome. None worked well enough to use. Am fine now however. Will use my beat up XP Laptop and Firefox until site is upgraded,
    Thanks again

IE6 only works on XP, IE7+ are different (more "secure" being the reason) so don't work with many legacy applications. You've no way around this problem on a new machine other than running Windows XP Mode if you have Windows 7 pro or higher. With home premium & basic etc this is not available

What about VBox or VMWare then? ;)

You even get XP with IE6, XP with IE7 and Vista with IE7 virtual HDD images for free from Microsoft (time limited, 6 month or even 12, not sure).

There usually specific ones for a certain purpose people in a certain job/position etc must use. Mums a teacher and faculty E-Portal is one off the top of my head, although even on ie6 the site has a habbit of crashing and the teachers loosing all their work :rolleyes: . Also its though sh!t for the Mac users :P

I rem those hp's with the quickplay buttons, if you just press the quickplay button to start you should see some icons on screen which give you a choi ce of what to start, you should see one that resembles the windows flag, like the symbol on the 2nd btn to the left of the spacebar, if you select that icon it should boot to windows.

Did not work as Quickplay loads without Windows,(I think). On pressing the Windows icon, it went into hibernation and could not be rebooted.
