Toshiba or HP?

    Neither of them.

The AMD E-300 is absolutely useless (it compares to an Atom N550 in a netbook), the Pentium B960 is a lot better alright but with your budget you should easily find a Core i3 or even a Core i5 processor.

I think there's an Acer Core i5 with HDMI out at HN for 498 Euro.

    Edit: here

Thanks for that. I was in HN today and they had a HP630 with an i3 processor for €449. The HDD was 320GB, but that's not really an issue.

They also had a Fujitsu upgraded to 6GB RAM for €429, I think it had the 6200 chip.

Mind you the cheap laptops with 6 GB RAM are usually AMD E-Series Fusion or Celeron/Pentiium dual core processors to make the deal look more appealing, but none of them is a match for any Core i CPU and the extra memory is rather an overkill with such slow processors.

With a 500 budget I would not settle for anything less than a Core i3.

Yes. And I found that almost ALL of the laptops on sale in shops are the previous models to what you can get for the same price on, say, www.elara.ie

I'm leaning towards this one now:

Just had a quick look at Elara, the Tosh has only 3 GB RAM. here's a Sammy with 4 GB RAM and bigger HDD for 20 Euro more.

3 GB RAM with a 64-bit OS doesn't make much sense and it isn't really on par today anymore.
