1st HTPC Video / Gaming Build Help

So I'm getting sick of using my main laptop as the media center for gaming and watching movies / Tv shows on the plasma.

It does the job for both perfectly but I'd like to just have the standalone box by the TV as I tend to use this laptop for work-related purposes which can affect it's performance in gaming and HD playback.

I'm thinking of an all-rounder build, one that does gaming and video comfortably. In terms of gaming, I don't need a power-house GPU or CPU but one that will play the latest games at a reasonable rate. I'm not fussy, I can live with gaming at 1280x720 :pac:

Anyways, I mostly play arcade and older console games. Rarely, I play the latest games. Skyrim being the latest.

OS or any other kind of software isn't an issue for me as I can deal with that myself.

My current, meager but does-the-job setup :pac:

    40'' inch Philips plasma
    Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop 1000
2.1 Speakers (Might go to 5.1 but that isn't top priority at the moment)
2 Xbox 360 Controllers for Retro gaming
3TB external storage for Movies / TV / Games
    Dell Studio 17 laptop

Budget is around €800, I just need to cover these things comfortably. I'd probably be looking at 2TB storage (2 1TB HDD), too

    Any advice would be great.
