hi guys,Im on illness benefit for almost 2 years now.(im a 51 year old male) and as it lasts 2 years tops, i have to either look for job seekers allowence, invalidity pension or the Disability Allowence,I have a heart condition which was diagnosed 3 years ago and now have 14 stents which were fitted in 3 hospital visits, the last few were put in this time last year, there is no way i would be able to do the job i used to do as im after slowing down an awfull lot and at this stage i think i look and feel 20 years older than i am,would i be better off applying for the invalidity pension or the Disability Allowence,I have worked in the same line of work since i served my apprenticeship in 1980 and even though i found it interesting and enjoyed it i think its beyond me now,i went back to work after having the first stents fitted and i was like an old man,ie very slow and unsteady and in the end i was layed off,if there is anyone who was/is in a similar situation they might be able to offer me some advice/thought on the matter.I was called to see the medical referee a few weeks ago but have heard nothing since and at this stage im worried that if i dont put in my claim in time i might end up with no payment at all for a time, sorry about the long post and thanks in advance to anyone who reads it,regards

I agree, but you be assessed as being to do any job not just the one you used to.

As MP22 said apply for Invalidity immediately. I'v just been watching the delays that are currently existing in DSW on the News on RTE 1, and, frankly its a bloody disgrace.

Hey OP I would definately go for the invalidity pension if I were you. A friend of mine has severe epilepsy and has had it for the last 24years and she has been fighting tooth and nail for the disability for the last 3years, shes entitled to it, has passed the means test and got doctors reports from specialists at beaumount hospital dublin and they are just refusing to give it to her. Its disgusting. From what ive seen I wouldnt recommend anyone go down that road if they can avoid it.
Best of luck with whatever you choose.

Sorry I forgot to add if you're worried about the waiting period go to the community welfare officer, they will be in your local health centre. If you've applied for some form of support they should help you so you wont be broke while waiting at least :)
