Oh my, the sweet irony. I just tried this earlier today :D

The charge you as a van, not a car :)

Edit: thought you meant automatic/ basket type barriers. Still charge you as a van (what I tried this morning)

Don't get your hopes up at the cashier either, it happened once I was charged as a passenger car. The look of disappointment as I went through from the cashiers face that time... :pac:

It should be charged at the private rate if the vehicle is taxed privately. Out of interest I just tried entering the reg number of a privately taxed Transit into eflow.ie to see how much it would want for an M50 toll and it only asked for the private rate of €3.00 rather than the commercial rate of €3.80.

Because tolls are based on type of vehicle, not taxation class.
Goods vehicle is still a goods vehicle, even if it's taxed as private.

That must be a mistake in their system I suppose.

It is strange because I tried the reg of my own Focus van (commercially taxed) as well and it asked for the commercial rate for it. So I just assumed it was done off the taxation class.

Maybe Sean could try the same with the reg of the van in question to see what toll it asks for:

    Most likely that's the case.
Probably when they were developing the system, then 99.9999% of goods vehicles in the country were taxed as commercials, so they just made fee dependent on taxation class.

Cheers guys. So it's looking like you can get the cheap rate on the m50 but pay the full rate anywhere else?

Above is my thread from the 'ask e-flow' forum.

And My PM reply from them:

    "Hi Paul,

My colleague Ciaran passed your query on to me as we are all on Boards.ie at different times - I can advise you that your van is charged €3 per toll trip through the M50.

    All the best,
    Una"

For the automatic toll barriers it goes by the class of the vehicle....i.e commercial/private etc.

I've been through the M50 toll and only had to pay the private rate.

Toll booths might be different as you'll have to convince someone to look up from their magazine for a moment to look at your tax disk.:P

One would think, that it's because they assign a rate according to vehicle taxation class on M50 instead of vehicle type like they do anywhere else.

However I just recalled it's not the case, as I've been passing few times M50 with a coaches and minibuses taxed as private and was always charged a higher rate (3.70).
