Rear Headrests - Discovery 2 - 2002

How do I remove the back seat head rests in a 2002 Land Rover Discovery? There are no push in clips - just round circular pieces covering the 2 spikes of the head rest - you turn them to move the headrest up and down but I cannot remove them completely

Turning the circular pieces - this will only raise and lower them - I pulled hard to remove them but not overly hard as I don't want to break anything - but if they were going to come out from just doing that they would have.

Checked the owners manual - no help.

Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this!
