Long jump question.

Hi, I was hoping someone could help me with regards to setting up along jump to practice for kids comunity games. I can't seem to find any info about distance from jump board to sand pit etc. or how wide the board is supposed to be?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as we are hoping to start training this week.
Any info on jump/approach techniques would be also appreciated.

We kept our board 1m from the pit. That's probably best for younger kids as anything further will intimidate them. And our runway is 30m to the board because we didn't have space for 40m.

This demonstrates that we need a sub-forum for field events

As to coaching the young ones, if they're new to it then, left to their own devices, they will just charge up and jump. It's worth spending a short while getting them to do a few drills.

1. 'Pop-ups' off 2-3 steps, concentrating only on knee drive and height not length
2. Incorporate 1 above into a slightly longer run up landing in the pit feet together and spikes/soles forward not down (think Tomlinson)
3. Now repeat 2 concentrating on arm drive

If possible, get the young athletes to forget about the board during practise. Eyes and head should be level at take-off, not looking down, or they won't achieve proper lift.

One fun suggestion to encourage 'spikes forward' on landing - build a hill of sand (has to be wet) and get the youngsters to demolish it with both feet.

Few tips for kids learning:

1) Have them stand at the edge of the pit diving forward. Aim here is to work on the landing. Have them push forward and aim to try not put there hands behind them on landing (a bad habit which can cost younger athletes huge distance in there jumps). Also works on an athletes arm drive to propel the body forward

2) put a very light obstacle at the edge of the pit approx 30cm high or so (think narrow cardboard box or something along those lines) This will stop a kid worrying about height and get them focusing on height for take off.
