First thing would be to get hold of a voltmeter/multimeter and see what sort of voltage supply you are getting at the connectors for the headlights. You should be getting battery voltage, i.e between 12 v and 14.5v. If you are getting anything less than this, its time to check the circuit over for areas of high resistance, bad earths, corroded connectors etc. This would affect the brightness of your lamps.

Are they projecter type lights? I've just had a similar problem with an Almera. I took the light apart to examine it (had to break it) and I concluded that the problem was caused by lack of space around the bulb because it is enclosed in the projector housing. The result was that the heat of the bulb eventually burned the reflective surface and it turned black, result: no light being projected. The only solution is a new set of lights, €200 - €400, sorry!

If they're fitted incorrectly or are the wrong fitment, they won't be as bright.

Did you buy a hid kit, or just xenon bulbs?

My money is on cheap HongChong "Xenon" specials - poor quality filament bulbs, painted blue...

To be fair, I've heard other people complaining about the light output of the 323. Although I think that may have been the 323 which had projector lights for low beams?
