Yellow southern plates

Lately I've seen a lot of southern registered cars with northern style plates. They seem to be mostly modified cars and from Donegal.

Anyone know what the story is with them? Is it just about dodging speed cameras or is it a style thing?

Some men wear Y fronts, some wear boxers, some wear none.

No matter what you wear you still have to wipe your ass clean.

I think its just a style thing. But was more popular a few years back. The chef/tutor of the course im at, has a passat she slaped on them plates on of the days. Gards pulls her over the next day and she is warned to put the standard plates back on. The car isint even modified, all it has is a set of 17" alloys with lowprofile tyres.

 what has that got to do with car reg plates?

Not road legal and makes the car look like it's a boyracer/**** car.
Guards jump all over them as soon as they spot them.

Hi OP. Back in the day Southern cars were slightly unwelcome in certain northern areas. Yellow rear plate reduced the amount of attention they'd get when over the border.... Don't understand why its done now though.

I've seen some time ago one of them with number like 11-G-1234 (on the right part of G it was obviously different number.

I thought it was a southern car registered in 2011 in Galway.
    However I was wrong.
It was actually a genuine northern plate with number IIG 1234

About as much as any of the answers that are going to be listed in this thread :pac:

To answer the OP's question, it's so they can 'stick it to the man'

It's because they wish they were English even though they live in the Republic. Why else?

I hope that was an ironic comment.. otherwise Politics is thataway

It's a fashion thing OP - same as those who have different style fonts on their plates or German style metal plates.

the irony is that I am English, living in the republic and have standard plates.

Do people not realise that any modification of plates (colour, font, or German) screams "i've no taste or class"

The DVLA have restrictions on how UK plates can look. Should we do the same?

I agree, I don't think it ever in the past had anything to do with pimping your car..

As far as I remember southern regs were quite conspicous up north and the reasoning was to change your rear plates to yellow to really to try and avoid being stopped unecessarily.

    Not this again:mad:

Whether your number plate is white, yellow, blue, red, orange or purple with black polka dots, 'up north' NO ONE CARES! (except vosa for the polka dots maybe:D)

I've had a few twincams, black ones. Yellow plates with the slightly larger/bold characters looked darn good. You got to admit it, some cars look really well with yellow plates. Black cam, superlites, whip aerial, yellow reg. Pure class.

P.S I'm prepared for all you naysayers, sure isn't it different tastes that makes the world so interesting.

To be fair I think an Irish reg plate that's legal in every other way bar it's colour being yellow looks well on a new/modern and unmodified car.

Shame it's not legal - otherwise I'd have it on me octy.

I was talking about in the past... 1970 to about 1976 ish

If anyone has their plates changed now it is purely for cosmetic purposes as far as I can see.

Nothing wrong with that? Everybody wants their pride and joy to look the best it can in their eyes. You might as well say then that detailing your car is for cosmetic reasons as well?

The restrictions in the UK are more severe though. All of their plates are in the same font - over here you see all sorts of different fonts on reg plates.

I'd like to get the proper UK size and shape plate for my 75, could't care less if it's yellow or not as it fits the space for the plate properly

I always see this blue E39 knocking around Newry with the reg "OIW xxxx" but its spaced awkwardly to resemble a southern plate :pac:

450 Rangers supporters on the Ferry back from Stranraer would suggest some people care

Ha.... True. Not getting into the politics of it that's why it was done. Nowadays nobody cares. That said, I still hate leaving my car in certain parts of the north...

Never said there was anything wrong with it.

I probably would say detailing is cosmetic reasons too, never really thought about it all that much. But making it look nice (detailing) is cosmetic.

    :)

Then you like myself would appreciate the concern during them of being over the border. It wasn't exactly the nicest of experiences at the height of the troubles.
