JSA and applying for college

I'm thinking of going back to college and applying for it soon, but a friend told me that I'm required to sign off immediately after making an application since it will mean I am not genuinely seeking work.

Is this the case? I won't know if I've been accepted for another 3 or 4 months so I'll still be applying for jobs (I'd rather not go back to being a student but I might have to). Any help would be great.

You can obviously still actively seek work until you start college.

Have you considered Back to Education Allowance? If not, check out the details here http://www.welfare.ie/EN/Schemes/BackToEducation/Pages/btea.aspx

You must of course be looking for and available for full-time work to retain your Jobseekers payment. You will only run into problems if you start restricting your jobseeking efforts due to your intention to start college. If you find work, you will be expected to take it, and give up your education plans. As long as the plans for education are conditional on your not getting full-time work before then, then you should still satisfy the Genuinely Seeking Work criteria.
